What are symptoms of low compression ?
I have not tested for low compression, as I do not own a tester. I have heard of a "thumb test" to get a vauge idea. Any insight is appreciated.

Low compression symptoms include hard starting, or not starting at all; poor performance, missing, smoking, or no power. The list goes on. It comes from worn rings, worn valves/seats, worn sleeves, or some combination of all three. Simply put, with some exceptions (stuck rings) it is usually a high hour & worn out engine. As to the thumb test.....well, unless you have a very sensitive thumb, you won't be able to tell 120 psi (a rebuilt engine) form 90 psi (minimum psi). The thumb test is primarily to find the compression stroke or TDC for timing purposes.
