Took out the distrubutor, stuck a long screwdriver down and tweeked the oil pump shaft CW about 1/4 turn, moved the rotor CW one tooth, dropped it back in and bolted it down. Said a prayer, hit the started, bumped the choke, and the Old Warrior fired right up and ran so sweet I just had to dance a jig, which scared the neighbors. No valve clatter, 30psi oil pressure at idle, up to 45 or 50 at power. Ran several temp tanks of gas through it, shut down and fired up real nice several times. Only problem was fan hitting the shroud, beat on that with an old shovel handle and big hammer, it don't hit no more. Life is sweet! Man, that new engine sounds good.

WOO HOO! So, are you going to share the secrets of re-installing the distributor and initial timing proceedures for when I get mine ready???

Congrats,

Yep, I'll share all I know, 'course if I sleep, I might ferget! It needs to be a modified thumb test, gotta know that it'll blow the thumb out before it gets TDC, so I figure you could feel for the piston coming up to TDC with something, or just guess and adjust it. Thing is, you havta move the slot in the oil pump to make the fine adjustments, but now I have my number one plug wire on the hole marked #1 on the cap, and the timing is close enough for it to run strong. I'll actually put the light on it next and lock it down, but first, I gotta figure out the very dim marks on my flywheel. The way you work at it, you'll be built and running in no time!

I don't know that I would have thought about moving the slot in the oil pump, I have never seen that anywhere. I know what you mean about dim timing marks - I thought when I get my flywheel back from the machine shop, I would rub a white grease pen over the recessed numbers, then wipe it down so I could see the marks much easier when I go to time mine.

A trick my Dad showed me years ago, he always kept a thing of white touch up paint, the little ones with the brush. He'd use it to 'highlight' the timing marks, it would stay on for tune-ups later, and was easy to see.
