Thanks for the help, guys. Apparently no one properly informed me that I could not leave the ignition key on for extended periods of time. I had no idea before all of this that it is offering a constant supply of juice to the coil with the key on. Kinda of a strange design?

Well, I don't know about your parts - but locally here in LA, the tractor places want alot of $ for a replacement front mount ignition coil for the old 8N. Funny thing is that it sounds somewhat cleaner and smoother with the changing of the wires and the adjustment of the points, but it seems to have 'less power' - Let me see if I can explain. It seems REALLY WEAK until the throttle gets around 2/3 or 3/4 power - before that point it sounds VERY weak - almost like it is not in adjustment properly.

Then when I take off in 2 or 3 gear it has good acceleration then kinda falls back down and slows up a little. It is like the throttle/governor or cabr is out of place now. Would that be affected since now I am actually running on all 4 cylinders and not the 3 before. (plug 3 had no wire in it just rubber gasket) haha. How do readjust the governor, carb or whatever. Thanks!

Any ideas? Thanks so much for all of the information!

Andy

Way to go. Congratulations on getting it going. BTW, it is not a strange design. All points ignition vehicles, including the millions and millions of cars built prior to electronic ignitions have the same design and the same problem.

Way to go Andy. Now get out there and get to work

Coils are tough to diagnose. I bought 2. One broke (post) and one was bad out of the box. From now on I buy all my electrical parts at TSA or Advance (yes they can get most N ignition parts next day)
You may pay more but both places guarantee satisfaction. More than I can say for the FNH dealer.

Oh yeah, I ended up putting back on the original coil. It was fine, I had so many other marginal parts and connections that I couldnt get a healthy spark until I redid all the electrics.

Dont forget to replace the switch if its old and funky. It can cause many phantom wierdnesses.

Sorry, no advice on the carb. Lots in the archives.

Good for you! Front mount coils can be had for 25-30 USD if you shop around. I unwittingly paid $50 to NAPA one sunday afternoon. Never again. Not leaving the key on is one of those lessons best learned at the price of a new coil. We would have told you sooner, but you wouldn't have remembered. Bet you won't forget now . My lesson cost me that $50. BTW, I keep a spare coil in my parts drawer.
Just guessing now about your WEAKNESS problem: You might check the timing advance on the left side of the dist. Could be a lot of other things too.. Just my 2¢ . HTH
