I have a 1948 Ford 8N and have had a recurring problem with starting. When I push the starter button, I just hear a clicking noise coming from the starter solonoid. I replaced the solonoid with a new one, and had the same problem. I have check the battery and all connections..they are all clean and tight. I have removed the entire starter assembly and plan on getting it rebuilt next. Do you think that's the best idea? Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

My similar problem was due to the ground strap connected to the frame near the steering box. I removed the strap and sanded the frame, the copper strap connection and the washer on the bolt then reconnected it. The tractor fired right up. I was suprised because the solenoid was clicking like I had a dead battery, but my battery tester showed a full charge. Doug.

Could it be that there is a dead spot on the starter???? Mine does this sometimes, or could it be that the battery is only around 5 volts . ? I need to figure this one out Robert,

Unless you have an obvious problem like a bad cable or battery that won't source the 100-150 amp draw the starter wants.. I'd also guess that you have a bad starter. You did good by replacing the solenoid. That or the battery is usually the prime culpret.

Some starter shops can load test that starter. If it is dragging or loading high.. it will need work.

Sgt Dan,
I"m no electrician but can tell you what"s been on previous posts. You probably will end up having the starter rebuilt. Sounds like it may have a "dead spot." Before that, you can try scraping out the grooves on the armature where the brushes ride, and cleaning the areas on the starter and mounting face on the engine. Needs to be clean in that area to insure a proper ground. I think if the latter helps at all, it will be only temperary.
