Anybody know how the pulley is attached to the shaft on a late model 350? The end of the shaft is flush but looks to be threaded, hard to tell. If so, would it right or left hand? The shaft center has a 3/8 hex bore and pulley hub is round so I gave it a medium effort each way w/allen wrench & pipe wrench. I know there's a GM special tool that I don't have as of yet. Long post! Thanks anyone, Pete.

pete, all gm power steering pulleys are pressed on, ive changed hundreds of 'em, they require a special puller, usually if you buy the replacement pump at a good auto parts store they will remove the pulley for you, we always did,it will require a air wrench the installation tool will come with the new pump, it is a threaded bolt, with a small square head, a nut, and a couple of washers,if you bought just the pump and have to change the resavoir too, dont nick the big o-ring doin it!!!!! they aint avalible by theirselves. ericlb

Yep.. I agree with the others.. pressed on.. special 80$ tool to remove. last time I had to pull one.. I dropped by a local service station where a friend works, and he ran it off for me. As I remember.. his little 3/8 gun wouldn't do it.. had to switch to use a 1/2 " gun.

Autozone will sell you the tool and then refund you after you are finished with tool. The pulley is pressed on.

You need the tool. You can probably rent it from the parts house or most places that sell you the part let you use it free with a deposit. The tool also reinstalls it.

Typically pressed on, like pulleys on Chrysler alternators from way back when.

Is the hole in the center of the shaft threaded for the reinstalling tool?

I'm not familiar with any that are screwed on. Do you know the original application? If it is actually threaded on, and you know which way it ran on the original application (or which way it pumps oil out the outlet), it would obviously unscrew the other direction.

If it's pressed on, here's what a puller looks like:

The hole in the shaft is only a little deeper than the hex portion, no threads. The hub has a groove in the middle, so I can see how I could, with the tool, push on the shaft and pull it off, but no obvious way to push it back on, other than a press. It's still on the engine. I'll regroup tomorrow and maybe check what NAPA has for a tool. Thanks, Pete

The pump is O.E.M. on my '97 pickup. I'm going to get whatever tool is needed because I don't think it will fall off without it. Thanks everyone for your time, Pete.
