I'm electrically challenged and I do not understand the reading/meaning of my ammeter. When the reading is in the negative sector (low idle) does that mean that my battery is being discharged? When in the positive sector, is my battery charging? Thanks much.

rick, IF everything is hooked up correctly, yes a neg ammeter reading (current) indicates that current is coming from the battery - discharging. a pos current would indicate current coming from the charging system. did you disconnect the system lately and not re-polarize the charging field after reconnecting?

Think of that meter as a 'net' charge indicator.

Is this an 8n or 9n/2n? If 9n/2n, you may be able to correct that low idle discharge by adjusting your 3rd brush up slightly.

If this is a 8n, and it is discharging at idle.. I'd clean and check all my connections.. especially ground at the battery cable, and all terminals. Especially check conenctions to the vr. Ideally, it should at least make up for ignition draw ( 3 - 4 amps ) even when idleing.. though gennies are not very efficient at low rpms.

At what rpm do you break even?

You know more than you thought. You got it right. The ammeter is measuring current into or out of the battery. + (into) is charging and - (out of) is discharging.
