Hello Again,

Well, my 1950 front mount, 8n won't start. I have re-wired it completely. Rebuilt the carb, has brand new plugs, wires. Getting good spark, but won't even give a hint of firing up. Getting gas to the carb. Tried pulling off the air cleaner intake and when I put my hand over and crank, gas pours out, although it seems kinda blackish. Maybe from carbon build up in the manifold? don't know. Anyways, I give up. Help!

thanks,
Rich

Try cranking just the starter with 12 Volts, make sure your ignition is hooked to 6 V,I had the same problem on a 2N,the compression was so low that it wouldn't start unless I spun it over real fast.

In addition to what Zane & souNder said, replace the plugs. If you've got gas pouring out of the carb, you've flooded it.

First you need to determine if it is ignition or fuel problems that is causing it not to start.

Go get a spray can of starting fluid (either) and shoot a good 10 second dose into the air cleaner. Do not choke the engine. If it starts the problem is fuel related. If it doesn't it is most likely ignition related.

Be sure that you have the spark plugs wires going to the correct plugs. You would be surprised how many people don't have a clue that each wire must go to it's correct plug acording to the firing order as they come out of the distributor cap.

i have a question here. assuming we are talking oil bath air cleaner. will spraying in to the louvered air cleaner intake allow any ether to enter the carb intake, since it has to go through the oil bath? if we drop the oil bath bowl, can we spray the bottom of the mesh screen? or, is it best to remove the "air cleaner to carb" pipe and spray directly into carb intake (what i've been doing)? reason i ask is this is a royal pain to do in 0 degrees and am looking for easier way that works.

KABOOOOM, watch for flying head. I hope that was a misprint. 10 second shot of starting fluid? 1 or 2 seconds would be plenty . 3 or 4 seconds at air cleaner stack will fire up a 14 liter(855 cu in) cummins at -20 deg.
Respectively

Well, 10 seconds might be a little over kill but it won't harm anything anyway since the N engine is such low comperssion. May even cause a little knock when it fires up but that won't harm the N engine either.Might lock a diesel down for a few minutes if you put too much in one of those.

Could also just spray it in as you are cranking the engine. You may need to use all three hands to do it though. All good mechanics have three hands don't they???

If you are spraying it into the air cleaner.. the oil is going to trap alot of the ether.. if the air cleaner pipe is off.. obviously you would use less ether.

When you say spray into the air cleaner, do you mean leave the air cleaner piper off and spray it into the back of the carb? The gas is clean going into the carb. Has a pre-filter that's nice and clean. When I replaced the plug wires, I did them one at a time so as not to mix them up. Also, when it's flooding back out the butt end of the carb, why is the gas kinda blackish? Is that carbon from the manifold? I just rebuilt the carb, so it's not that.

thanks,
Rich

How old is the gas you're using? My old 8N refuses to accept gas with any water in it.

Might be a dirty carb.. or real dirty tank. If you say it has good spark.. see if it will start with a whif of ether,
