After much honing, my bushings will now accept my sector gear shafts, so I'm gonna assemble the Old Warrior's steering gear this weekend. Looking at it last night I realized that Ididn't know what I was doing. Just how do I insert the gears so that everything is keyed correctly? I'm thinking maybe hang the arms off the sector shafts and let them hang straight down while inserting the shaft, but that's a guess.

Well, I knew that Dan had just done his, kinda hoping he'd feel sorry for me, and hop on over a couple counties and do mine!

I'll break out the FO-19 and look at the pics, let y'all know how it turns out.

If I understand your question correctly - you are asking how to install the sector gears into the housing to mesh with the shaft gear teeth? If so, you just install the left side sector shaft (the one with the double set of teeth) into the housing and put the one blocked tooth on that gear pointing up. Then put the center tooth closest to the shaft gear into the center groove on the shaft gear. The shaft gear wants to twist, so you will need to hold it in there straight with your other hand through the opening on the opposite side of the housing to get it to line up with the left sector gear. Then do the right side, mesh the fourth tooth on the right sector gear with the fourth groove of the left sector gear you just installed. To get the cover plates back on, you must turn the adjuster screw to "pull" the cover on - don't pound on it like I did :-)

Don't forget to install your new o-rings before snugging on the sector gear cover plates. I will not put my arms on the sector splines until the gearbox is mounted to the tractor.

I don't know if this is correct, but I "think" the center line stamped on the top of the steering shaft (where your steering wheel goes) should be pointing towards what would be the back of the tractor when your steering sectors are centered straight ahead - at least that is what mine appears to be. This way, you will know what angle to install your sector arms on the splines correctly.

Hope this makes sense,
Dan

Yep.. that's pretty much word for word out of the f0-4 manual.. I just did my 8n box last week.. and used those steps. I believe the naa box procedure would be substantially similar.

On the 8n at least, the pittman arms that hang on the sector gears are keyed with a double tooth.. so they can't go on wrong. Hopefully the NAA are the same way..
