It’s happened again (1st time - see post # 466781). The pulley and fan came off the water pump shaft while the tractor was running. I don’t think the radiator was damaged this time. I did find out some more information, that I did not have last time. The water pump went bad last spring and was replaced by a cousin, before I got the tractor. When I put this back together after the first time, I had to tap the pulley on the water pump shaft with a hammer, tight, but just tapping it on. I’m wondering now if the replacement shaft diameter is up to spec? The other possibility is the pulley interior was damaged when the original water pump failed ? Anyone out there have a tractor in pieces and willing to put a micrometer on the water pump shaft and pulley interior diameter, so I can check the specs. I’m looking for any kind of suggestions on this repair; I don’t want to do it three times.

1) Please educate me - what is PRESS FIT ?

2) FYI - I did use a new snap ring when I re-mounted the pulley to the water pump shaft

3) New water pump with pulley installed, sounds like good idea. What does replacing water pump involve? I’ll assume there is at least a gasket between the pump and the block, correct?

Thanks for the input guys, any other suggestions, advice, encouragement, would be appreciated. Seems like for every hour of seat time, I’ve spent a couple in repairs and maintenance, a bit discouraged and frustrated.

Press fit means the shaft is a couple of thousandths BIGGER than the hole, and it takes some SERIOUS pressure to mate the parts.

The water pump is simple to replace, outside of a little time to scrape the old gasket off, and replacing it SHOULD end your problems!

Put it to you this way: A nail hammered into a block of wood is a "press fit"! Basically, the hole squeezes down on the shaft and the shaft presses outwards against the hole and the two hold each other together.

I'm not sure if it's supposed to have a snap ring like an "N" waterpump, but anyhow, the pulley needs to be a PRESS FIT. (I believe the snap ring, as used on the "N"'s is sort of a safety deal, as a last resort, to, keep the fan and pulley from coming off if the press fit isn't.)

You should not be able to "tap" it on with a hammer. Furthermore, you would not WANT to tap it on with a hammer because of possible bearing and seal damage from pounding.

The proper way to press the pulley on would be to support the opposite end of the SHAFT, (NOT the housing) so there is no load placed on the bearings.

The shaft is hardened steel so it's likely OK, but the pulley hub must be worn a bit, or perhaps even cracked.

This very site has replacement waterpumps with the pulley installed for $56.06. Cheap, compared to a new radiator!

Randy,
Is that a slot for a snapring or clip just back from the end of the shaft?

Get yourself a new water pump installed and you"ll never have to mess with it again. About $50 at FNH or cheaper on eBay, quick, before it eats your radiator.

Careful. A lot of newer parts have metric measurements. John,PA
