Off topic in Ford Tractor but you guys are the best I know of so, here goes. I got a water tank fill problem.

The water tank I am working with is apx. 12 feet across and 24 inches or so deep. The outside water feed pipe is 1/2 inch galvanized. The float valve will not shut off any more and at best will reduce to a fast drip, which causes a constant overflow. (Of course we cut the water off at the under ground for now)

Let me see if I can describe this thing. There is a standpipe coming up the outside with an elbow on top that runs the 1/2 pipe towards the middle of the tank of water. Now, on that pipe is an old old brass fitting that opens or closes according to the level of water in the tank. That level is determined by at commode type plastic float. To get an idea of the float itself, look in the commode tank in your bathroom. I have ask tractor supply, the local worthless Lowe’s hardware super store and no one knows of anywhere I can find any kind of thing like that valve. An Internet search did not do much good either. If any of you remember the ole swamp coolers as we called them, they had a similar type shut off to control the water to the pads; of course it was in a small plastic tube.

So, as Daddy is in the hospital recovering from a series of minor strokes, I would love to get this repaired before he even hears about it.

Any and all ideas well be reviewed and considered.

The valve your talking about is called a ballcock
and is avalible at any plumbing supply. The galvanized supply line is likly to be causing the problem with the valve. rust builds up inside the galvanized line and affects the seats in the valve causing the valve not to shut off correctly.

Gee you are lucky..... ...

I was decrbing the assembly as a guest presentator in a class room at a vo-tech school a few years ago.

I was advised to not use that TERM by the management. So, instantly, I used the term "flow control valve". There were female students in the class. I figgered, if the girls wanted to become a "PLUMBER's Helpers, at least they should be able to understand the LINGO.

THIS PROGRAM IS BEING PRESENTED BY: The ball-cock , fluid flow control valve manufacturer:

Sometimes commercial plumbing supply houses have what is termed "evaporative cooler fill valve".
I would check a "quality plumber's supply house" in your area. Not LOWES.

Just an update and a Thank You note for all your help guys.

I was finaly able to get the pipe and valve off. Only broke one of the old old fitting, but was able to replace that. I disassembled the valve and was able to replace the o-rings and it works fine now. I did bend the part that runs out to the float some to set the tank level a bit lower from the rim.

You guys are the best.

Wish it was that easy to fix my Dad.. those little stokes he had really knocked him down.. Still in hospital..
