We switched from cable (broadband and FAST!) to dialup (16.8K-SLOW) when we left the city for the wide open spaces last fall. Hard to get used to. We went with Netscape at $9.95/month, and cussed it a bit because of the slow connection speeds we get out here.
Then, Netscape offered its accelerator service for free.
Let me tell you, it makes a HUGE difference in downloads. Yeah, some things like pictures are still slow, but surfing sites like this are a pleasure again.
And, at $9.95/month, I can live with a little wait time.
Try it, you mike like it.

I tried a dial-up accelerator package. It did not help at all. As a matter of fact, some of the Pop-Up programs I really need stopped working so I de-installed the accelerator.

One critical limitation with dial-up that no accelerator will help is how far you live from the local office. My office is 10 miles away and I live at the end of the circuit. People in town get true 50KB dial-up. I never got more than 19KB speed download using dial-up.

I finally converted to Dish Satellite Internet because that is the only other option I have. It's $49 per month. A lot faster, but NO WHERE CLOSE to DSL or Cable.

Before we switched to cable I had Net-Zero and purchased a modem which was V.92 compliant. When online and a phone call was coming in I would get an alert on the screen.l It asked me if I wanted to answer the phone. When I replied 'yes' a clock would start and allowed me to talk for I believe up to 3 minutes. During this thime the internet was 'IDLE' and when I hung up the phone I was back on-line again where I left off. The modem was only $20. It is really convenient because you don't miss a call and you don't disconnected.

R.M.,
Don"t know if you got your answer or not. My understanding about companies like NetZero,Netscape,AOL,Newroads, etc. is your webpages will load quicker but download/upload speeds of pictures/music/video etc. will not be different than regular dial-up. If you get download sppeds of 5.0 Mbps or better on dial-up feel fortunate. DSL speeds will basically be the same regardless your distance from the hub or number of people sharing the signal. It"s my understanding with cable, your speeds will vary based on how many other people are online sharing your connection. While cable is normally faster than DSL, it can vary.

Safety & blue skies,

DJ

I got the Bell South fast dsl about six months ago and I really like it.

Then my old computer (10 years old) died and I had to have a new tower and keyboard and mouse.
The new computer has the very latest in speed and memory and now there is just about no waiting to download anything. Like a whole new world. I was quiet satisfied with the old one but am glad that I finally did have to upgrade when it died. I think the computer repairman said that it has a "worm" got into it. I had an antivius for a while but the old computer was so slow when the anti virus was working it killed the computer so I had disabled it. Mistake!

I got the package with Bell South that gives me unlimited access to the Internet, fast dsl modem, four or five filters for all my extensions and with the package I have unlimited long distance calling. The telephone is not affected by the use of the computer on line.

You do have to have a fiber optic cable close to the site of the computer and we have had a fiber optic line by our house for about 15 years or so now.

I like it.

Cost me nearly $100 a month but I do a lot of long distance calling now that I couldn't do before. I have found several of my old Air Force buddies that worked on B29s and B50s with me back in the fifties and have enjoyed being able to talk to the again for the first time in nearly 50 years. We were radial engine specialist.

Good to hear you talked to your old buddies Zane.I do not have a fiber optics cable close by but I do have Corridor X about a mile from me to open up next year.I guess everything else will follow....By the way Zane glad you are feeling better now and I still think of your story about you and brother riding the motor bike all over the country..Take care R.M. I have DSL, and yes, you can use your phone at the same time you are on the internet. However, you need a filter installed on each phone in your house. As soon as my one year is up, I will be switching to cable, as it is faster than DSL.
Cable also costs more than DSL.

Had an excelerator that my dial-up provider offered. It seemed to help my XP machine some, but could not tell any difference on the old Windows 98. Now have SBC DSL which only costs me $5 a month more and love it. Will have to go back to dial up when we head to southern Texas next week (only part of the trip that I am not looking forward to) Yea!! 14 degrees here and 68 down there!! Wish all of you could go with us.

The guys are right, it's file compression that makes the packets move fater to your box. What they did not tell you is that if you spend a lot of time downloading files from the internet, files that are already compressed (like .zip) will not download any faster as they are already compressed, there is also debate in the IT world as to how much faster photos will download, general consensus is that web pages are about all that see the improved download speed.
Probalby still a better option if you don't have DSL/Cable available

R.M., I think those services work by compressing and pre-loading images and files into your cache. They do not speed up the actual operation of the phone line or modem.

According to the net-zero website:

"Before the text and graphics that make up Web pages get sent to your phone line, NetZero HiSpeed compresses them using a proprietary technology. Less data is sent so your surfing experience is that much faster! In addition, NetZero HiSpeed stores elements of frequently visited Web sites so they load faster on future visits. And with the NetZero HiSpeed pop-up blocker, you no longer have to wait for annoying pop-up ads to load."

Lemme know if you buy it and like it; I too suffer with a painfully slow dial-up connection. That's the price you pay to live in the boonies.

I have a coworker/friend in AL that uses a satellite/modem setup. The satellite gives him faster downloads & the modem gives him slow uploads. The whole package comes from his provider.

It's his only decent option in an area 1hr SW of Chattanooga.

My neighbor up on the NY farm uses phone line out and satellite in. I use his setup when I'm up there and I do not find it to be real impressive on speed. Since Direcway wants al la $90 a month 'til the box is paid for and $40-50 after that to go satellite all the way, & they're already hosing me a bunch for TV, I'm still dialing!

I use direcway one way satellite service here in central Texas since there is neither dsl or cable modem available out here in the country where I am. I've been using it since about 1994 when it was known as Hughes Satellite. I am extremely satisfied with my service. A typical 5 to 6 meg download will only take about 30 seconds whereas if I use dialup only it will take hours and more then likely will fail long before it has a chance to complete. Are you sure you are locked on to the main lobe of the satellite and not on a side lobe perhaps? All in all, while I agree their two way service is a bit pricey, I wouldn't give up my one way service for all the bits in cyber space!
