Yes Sirrea BOB , that flathead 6 cyl. Ford motor does have a relief valve in the oil pump. It should be idling cold around 20 to 25lbs. I would strongly urge that you drop oil pan ,take off oil pump and replace the valve or either oil pump. That low pressure is not good and will cause damage..

Hi CRS, Changing the relief valve and/or pump can't hurt anything. But, if the oil pressure is low due to loose clearances in the engine, replacing these items will not correct the problem. With very few exceptions, an engines oil pump will still be in usable condition when the rest of engine it completely worn out. This is an old engine, and yes the pump may have been re-used through several rebuilds, but I'd be looking at bearings if I were taking the pan off...Al English

Hi AL, Your are right, I went back and re-read what Bob had ask. I mis read his statement.Excuse Me. I thought it said he had rebuilt it. But after reading again it say (OR AM I IN FOR REBUILDING)?
Hay Bob, You might try compression test before going any further.

Hi BOB, I am not familiar with your engine, but yes, all engines have a pressure relief(regulator) valve somewhere in the oil system. The 5 pounds of pressure at idle is low. But if it can maintain 10 PSI at 1000 RPM, 20 PSI at 2000 RPM, etc, when hot, it isn't going to hurt itself. You didn't say what weight oil you are using, but if the engine is worn, heavier oil might get you by for quite a while. If you need heavier oil, use heavier oil. Don't use STP or similar products, in spite of what is generally believed they are poor lubricants. Good luck...Al English
