After Redoing all my seals/gaskets on my 9n besides the pump question asked earlier today, I noticed a small puddle of oil on the floor. Checked it out and found through my new paint what appears to be a hairline crack in the cast iron diff housing. It is about 2" long at the bottom starts at one of the bolt holes in the flange and goes towards the center of the housing. Any tips on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance

I'll add.. that you could also braze it up instead of welding... less traumatic if you aren't an experienced welder. The drilling to stop it is a must though.

You will also want to drain the oil before fixing it.. no matter how you fix it. Get the spot clean on the inside.. might even heat it with a propane torch to burn any oil residue out of the crack.. then clean with alcohol based cleaner before you jbweld.

Good advice has been given. Like George said take a look and see if anything else is damaged. Drill the ends to prevent spreading, vee out and JB Weld or Lab Metal.

Hey Luke, not looking to rain on your parade but something caused that rear end to crack. I had the same problem with my jubilee and when I took the differential gears out I found the pinion bearing support was broken as well. You may want to look into it a little further before you just weld it up and forget it.

i had a farmall c that had a crack in the axle housing on the bottom side and it always leaked a small puddle overnight.. i took a angle grinder got to bare metal then jb weld it, then grinded it down smooth and painted it worked fine till i sold it 4 years later and the new owner was aware of it and hasn"t been a problem to him

I think I would sand or grind it real clean and possibly v it out a little and put JB weld on it.

Drill a hole in each end of the crack so it doesnt spread. V it out and repair with JB Weld. steveormary
