I posted earlier and trying this again as the answer to my question did not seem right. My 9N starts, warms up, when I plow snow for about 20 minutes, she just seems to loose energy and eventually stalls. I can get back on in 15 minutes and the same thing happens again. I was told it was the ignition switch but this does not seem like is would cause it to loose power. If you all agree, I'll change the toggle er I mean ignition switch that's on there now. Sorry, but this just seems too easy to fix.
That's why I'm giving it another shot.
As always, all your responces are apprecitated.

PF..... ....why do you doubt? Its so eazy to check with a simple alligator clippie jumper wire. Its yer ignition switch gutts. They heat up and you loose sparkies and your tractor looses power and dies. The switch takes about 15-30 minutes to cool off and then you can re-start your tractor. REPLACE THE SWITCH. Don't fight it, 'cuz yer over yer expertize. ..... ..respectfully, Dell

PF: I had the same recurring issue with my '52 8N & listened to Dell's advice. I replaced the ignition switch ($9.00 - CHEAP) a few months ago & haven't had a problem since. Be sure ALL the connections are "clean, bright, and tight." GA Jim

Sez he don"t have an ignition switch. Got a toggle switch.

It is a switch that controls the ignition circuit
hence it is an ignition switch.

He has a toggle type ignition switch rather
than a key type ignition switch.

Either kind can have a problem with high resistance
when they heat up.

PF,

My 49 8N (Front Mount Distributor) gave me the same trouble one winter. It would start up fine and then poop out after about 20-30 mins of plowing snow. It turned out to be moisture getting into the distributor. I was plowing snow as it was still snowing lightly and the snow would get drawn into the radiator, where it would melt and get blown directly onto the distributor. I replaced all the cork gaskets, which by the way were missing, and the paper gasket that covers the points. That cured it! The next time your N poops out, take a hair dryer and dry out the points, distributor & cap. If she fires right up then then you have the same problem. I hope this helps.

Hec

During the winter, I fasten a piece of heavy canvas over the lower half of the radiator, by tying it to the lights on each side. Let the canvas hang below the bottom of the radiator. For the most part this solved the problem with snow blowing into and on the front mount distributor. Ron

Coil!!!! After it has run for awhile the coil will get hot an loose its resistance.
Replace the coil and you will have a good strong spark.

A bad ignition switch could cause you to loose power. Its resistance can go up as it heats up
causing lower voltage to the points and coil.
Two things to do to test this:
Make a jumper wire with two allegator clips on it
and jumper around your ignition switch next time it starts to loose power-- iffn that fixes the problem then you know that your ignition switch is going bad. Another test is to pull the choke knob when it is loosing power -- iffn that keeps it running then you could have weak sparkies and the richer mixture is easier for the weak sparkies to fire.

You could also be loosing power from lack of fuel delivery -- You have about three minutes of fuel in the carb float bowl. Iffn you are using fuel faster than your tank, fuel pipe, fuel shutoff and three filters can give you -- then you
could draw down the fuel in the carb and loose power due to lack of fuel flow. Let it sit fer a while and the carb bowl refills and you are good to go for a while.

Make a jumper wire out of a couple of alligator clips & a piece of wire. Next time it quits, jump the switch & see what happens. Could possibly be other problems, but that is the most likely and it is easy to check out.

It is at least a 'likely' possibility'. The 'bad' switch contacts heat up and drop power.. then your coil starves.. then the tractor dies. 10 minutes later it cools down and starts up.

To some extent, toasted front mount coils can do this.. but different time interval usually.

Another thing to check is gas tank vacume. 20 minutes is almost good for a gas tank vacume from a plugged tank.. next time it starts to die.. loosen the gas tank.. if that helps.. your tank vent is plugged.. if not.. hot wire it and see if it helps.

Thanks guys!
You've all given me a little more to go on. It did this last year and I just didn't use it till summer in which it seemed to go ok while pulling wood. Now it's doing it again. I'll do the clip thing first and work out to the distributer.

Thanks again. Where else can you get such been there, done that advice?
