Is the Pertronix Ignitor a very good idea to replace the points in my 8n?
Any opinions one way or another. Thanks Rick.

I installed the Pertronix on my 49 8n, frontmount 6v, + ground.

Worked great the first crank and still works great. Started right up in 20 degree weather after sitting for over 2 months recently.

It depends. If your tractor is 12 volts it should work great and not give you any problems if you don't incounter installation problems. There have been reports that the 6 volt Pertronix system needs 6+ volts to work and if your battery is a little low that it will not fire. My 49 N front mount is still 6 volts and points. I have an extra distributor. I am considering putting the electronics in one and having the second with points installed as backup. May only use in the summer time. I only consider doing this because a good point set is harder to find.

My tractor was a little slow starting when I first got it so I bought the same kit, spent half a day putting it in and trying to get it to work. Never got it to fire. Turns out I had the wrong coil and it burned up the new ignition system ( I think ). Got really mad... went and bought a new set of points and haven't had a problem since. I guess they work but you have to have a good Ohm meter to check everything before you put it together and power it up. I did do the 12V conversion which I highly reccomend. Now my tractor starts before the starter makes half a turn.

I installed it on my 8N side dist. because the distributor was so worn the points would have to be reset every hour of use. Bought it right from the manufacture for about $85 and kept the 6 volt system. The 12 volt system is a little cheaper. It was the best money I spent on this tractor, starts better runs better and no more setting points of timing.

I have not installed the Pertronix unit on my 2n yet, however I have used it on other applications (Ski boat, Classic Mustang, etc..) and can say it is worth its weight in gold. No more points to dealwith, set it and forget it. Both vehicles ran noticably better and became much better machines. I would definitely recommend it!
