I figured out the thing about reversing the front grease seal to ride against the back, flat side of the wheel spindle, but that opened another can of worms when I tightened up the nut to put it all back together. Ordinarily, I would remove all of the end play, then a little tighter and put in the cotter key. With the seal reversed, it will take out the end play early, so I'm guessing that I tighten up just about enough to put in the cotter key.

What's y'all's take?

You tighten it up until the wheel stops turning freely, then you back it off about 1/2 turn. Too loose is better than too tight when bearings are concerned I have been taught, and that is how I did my 8Ns. Front end is next for me as well after my engine rebuild...

Did some figuring on this, I think I have it figured out. If you go with the FNH seals, you're way ahead. They are different and special, softer rubber and more sealing surface against the flat, but $15 each. They drop right in, but then you will need to use a small punch and tap them down to the bottom of the seat, which will place the rubber seal right at or just below flush with the back edge of the hub. Now when you mount the hub on the spindle, the rubber flat will mate with the spindle flat and seal without binding, and you can turn the nut on until it bottoms and even tighten it a bit to square up the cotter pin hole and the hub will still turn freely. The nut has to be all the way on to make room for the big 5/32" cotter pin anyhow, so I think this is the right way. Then the grease caps go on and screw all the way in, using the same 1 1/8" wrench you used for the nut.
