I see the slick Sherman trans unit on Smith's site and see he has sold it. I understand that they are a 3 speed unit theirfor offering 12 fw and 1 rev speeds. Are these hard to come by? I may want to get one for my 8n sometime. Where is a good place to look for these? I am guessing they are pretty durable? I am sorry for all the questions lately I am trying to learn more about these. I am going to try to get a shop manual tomorrow at TSC.

Yes I was thinking about the reverse also I know the 8ns have a fast reverse it sure would be nice to be able to slow it down a peg or 2 :>)

I think the whole concept behind the under range Sherman was to give the user the necessary 540 rpm at the PTO at full throttle instead of at 3/4 throttle as originally set up by Mr. Ford. Apparently some users thought they were being robbed of the full power of the tractor by not being able to operate pto equipment at full throttle. And yes...I fell for it too. I am currently overhauling a Sherman Combo Over/Under to install in a '49 8N.....so it remains to be seen just how much advantage it will give me. As for the Over range....my '46 2N has a cable operated model of this type....and while it is very useful as a "road gear" additive...I find for 99% of the things I do the Normal range works just fine for me.

Thanks for the info. That is interesting about the pto speed I didnt know that the 540 was reached at about 3/4 throttle. Maybe I should find one and run it a while and see how I like it. Then I would know weather or not it would be worth the $$ to me.

12 speeds forward, 3 speeds rev. if it is over/ under, some are just over or just under(rare). Ratios are 0.6, 1, 1.5 this applies to pto speeds as well. that is 540 pto at 1550 rpm(STANDARD) 1000rpm in over and 2200 rpm in under .BURT
