What would cause the ignition coil resistor to go bad? Is this the same as the Ballast resistor?
How would a faulty one affect starting or running? How is it replaced? Sorry about the amount of questions in one post. Thanks for all the replies.
Rick T

I will post back, but it will probaly be Sun. or later. I have to work this weekend. So I will be using ether to hopefully start it to move this snow in So. Michigan we are suppose to get, but won't have time to really tinker with her. I will check all connections and go from there. Thanks Rick.

If you have a stock front mount N, and you asked about an ignition resistor.. then you would be refering to the ballast resistor. if you have a front mount N with a 6v coil, and a 12v conversion, and reference ignition resistor.. many peoples first thought will be the dropping resistor.. though it could also apply to the oem ballast resistor. etc.. etc..

They usually go bad by going open.. rarely have I ever seen a resistor fail by shorting internally. Causes could be simple extreme age.. corrosion.. physical damage .. vibration.. frayed wireing causing short circuits, and excessive current draws..

Well.. if the resistor opens.. no electrons flow to the igniton... If it shorts.. it could cook other ignition components by allowing too much current flow.. or if it shorted to ground, it would be bypassing the rest of the ignition system, electrically speaking.

Remove and replace fromt he back of the dash.. wire it up liek the old one if all was working.. or take a gander at one of the many wire diagrams out ont he net. .or in your service manual..etc. Essentially all you have are 3 terminals.. and you are running power thru the resistor via the switch.. then sending the power to the ignition coil.. etc..

Thanks for the reply. I do have a stock front mount N. 6v. Pos. Ground. So I am reffering to the Ballast Resistor, if it goes bad "open" would the tractor start at all? You posted "no electrons flow to the ignition". Could that cause it to be hard starting? I have good compression and good fuel flow. Replaced points And condensor along with distibutor plate. I am only able to start with ether when cold or warm. I had the coil checked at FNH and they said it was good. The tractor runs great once it starts, good power no smoke no burning oil. Sorry about the long post.
At wits end here. Rick.

The tractor will 'turn over' with the ignition open.. but it won't start at all with the ignition open.. no sparks.. etc. If there is no electricity flowing.. no sparks.

Now.. you could have lots of dirty contacts between the resistor conenctions.. key switch connections.. etc. i reccomend you cleaning all that up and trying it again. Another possibility is low compression. Rule out the easy electrical cleaning stuff first.
