I couldn't find the serial number on the engine block due to the grit and grime. When I get it home tomorrow, I'll clean it up and note the number. I did pull two numbers from the back left axle(?) area. On top was #8n4024, and below was
#2SHG30.
A few other notes: it does have side-mounted distributor and proofmeter on the dash. The wheels are painted red(although that probably has no significance in identifying the year).
BTW, what reading material would you guys suggest for someone with little mechanical aptitude, but plenty of desire?

Thanks,
N8NO

"How To Rebuild and Restore Farm Tractor Engines" by Yost is good.

"How to Restore Your Farm Tractor" book has some good advice and knowledge in it.

Both the 9N 2N 8N Rebuild and Tune-up videos have some good advice. the tune-up is basic, but it walks you through basic maintenance and tune-up visually.

And as mentioned, the must to have is the I&T Manual and locate an Owners Manual too. Between all of these on the shelf references, and advice from this forum, your confidence and abilites will grow by leaps and bounds. Don't worry, throw money at it, and anything that can go wrong can be fixed, mostly by you.

Have fun.

Can't remember for sure, but it seems like a proofmeter would mean you have a '51 or '52. Here's a couple of sites you need to check out:

Side mount dist came out in late 1950-1952(I have an early 1950,front mount)

Also check on the bottom of the hydraulic pump houseing, you should find a prod date cast into it, that's not to say the pump houseing wasn't made years before and was sitting on the shelf before it found it's way to the assembly line!(-:

later,dave

There is a date code on the starter mount cowl. Something like "D 2 7" (April 2, 1947) Letter represents month, first number represents day, last number represents year. Since you have a 8N it would be 1947 or later.
Post your date code here if you cant decipher it, someone will.

New 8N owner..... .glad you asked.

Recommend I&T FO-4 repair manual, readily available at most tractor parts emporiums, sponsors of this great N-Board, even Ford/New Holland fer peets shakes, $25 cheep, gettcha one.

P/N 8N-4024 is p/n for left axle trumpet.

Engine S/N is on left side just under cylinder head seam and can be difficult to read because they were factory hand stamped by some ol'guy that was shakie and week (grin)..... ...Dell
