Well I confirmed my thoughts I don't understand electrical stuff at all. I unknowingly switched the positive and negative cables on the battery to my 51 8n. What really confuses me is that the tractor still ran but it finally drained the batt. completely down. So know my question is after charging the batt. I went to hook the cables up the right way and the tractor started to turn over even with the key off. So does this mean the solenoid is shot or is my new starter button bad or better yet is the damage from my electrical stupidity much worse. Boy do I feel dumb.

Zeigler..... ...that is not surprizing. There is a "cut-off" relay inside your squarecan voltage regulator that is supposed to disconnect the generator guttz from the battery when the engine stops turning the generator so the battery doesn't drain out thru the genny. This relay is POLARITY SENSITIVE and needs to be "polarized" to match the battery polarity.

Since you most likely didn't re-polarize your genny/voltage regulator, you may have burned out your voltage regulator. Hard to say, but after you CORRECTLY POLARIZE your genny/voltage regulator, iff'n you can't keep yer battery charged, yer squarecan voltage regulator is probably BAD but the genny is most likely good. Charge it off to a learning experience.

To correctly "POLARIZE" your 8N's electrical system, (after you have yer battery correctly connected for POSITIVE GROUND) simply "arc-spark" your 8N's squarecan voltage regulator ARM and BATT terminals (heavy yellow wires) together with something metalic. Don't mucka'round with the 2-skinny black wires.

Ignition key switch should have NOTHING to do with yer starter motor turning over. Ignition switch is for sparkies only.

The 3-terminal 8N starter mounted solenoid is internally electrically HOT and operated by GROUNDING thru the big starter neutral safety interlock button by the tranny shifter. Check that your wire that goes from the small middle hard-2-gitt-2 terminal to yer trannys shifter starter button has not been shorted/grounded as it goes thru the bottom of the steering column dashpanel.

Disconnect tranny end switch wire first, iff'n starter don't turn, yer problem is inside your tranny. Iff'n starter turns, it most likely a bad wire. Disconnect the middle solenoid terminal, does the starter stop turning? its yer wire, Starter still turns, its yer 3-terminal starter solenoid guttz..... ...Dell

Unhook the wire from the little solenoid terminal. If it STILL turns over as soon as the cable is hooked up, the solenoid is shorted. However, reversing the battery connections should NOT have caused this, at least directly. Is the tractor still the original 6 Volt?

Are you still using the original tranny-mounted neutral safety starting switch?

Yes the tractor is still 6Volt as for the neutral saftey switch I don't know if I am or not. When I took the top plate off to change the starter button is there something I missed I simply took the bolt off and put the new one in and put the plate back on.

Well I went back out to the barn and took off the hard to get to terminal and the motor kept turning over so I am going to pick a new solenoid up tomorrow. I thank you for all your help and will let you know how everything turns out.
