After years and years of holding air, one of my back tires decided to get an air change. Only problem is the tire is so old it won't handle the beating to fix it. I have looked at tires of all kinds and would like to know which one for the $ is the best tire. The alliance I can get for 149.95 + tax, the Farm King is a few $ cheaper. Both are 6 ply. What tire holds up well. any others to look at. Don't need a high $ tire only want it to last about 40 more years like the goodyear ones that are on it now. I have heard of some that are not very good. Please help me make a decision while the wife is in a good frame of mind. Thanks

The store branded tires like Farm King and Alliance are made by one of the large tire makers. It could be Goodyear, Firestone or could be made overseas. Just being made by a Big Tire maker does not guarantee quality, but at least you know who's getting a paycheck for making the tires. To find out the manufacturer you need to get the DOT code from the tire and translate it at the link below. Here's some instructions:
Essentially the DOT marking serves as the tire's fingerprint. DOT signifies that the tire complies with U.S. Department of Transportation Tire Safety Standards, and is permitted for highway use. For example refer to the following markings:
DOT M5H3 459X 064.
Tractor tires will not have “DOT”, just the code as they are not rated for highway use
The first letter and number of the code designate the tire's manufacturer and plant code. The third, fourth and fifth number and letter, 459X, is the tire size code which is an optional manufacturers code that identifies the tire size and other specific characteristics of the tire. The final three numbers denote when the tire was produced, with the first two indicating the week, and the last number indicating the year (064 indicates the tire was built in the 6th week of 1994).
Write down the DOT number, then go to the link below, uncheck everything except "tires" in the left column and enter the first two digits of the code into the "DOT ID" box at the bottom of the right column.
