Just bought my new 8n and thought there should be some kind of bar connecting to my lift arms to tow things like wood splitters that need a ball. Any one know of this and what its called? Thanks.

Here is an idea. Buy one from Northern Hydraulics or make one yourself. Contact me directly if you want to make one yourself. Philip.

Philip,
Yes I'm interested in your setup. It looks sturdy enough. Is this something you use?

I made this about 4 months ago. Works well for me. Can you weld? Contact me directly if you would like a copy of the plans. Philip.

Yes, you may get a copy of the plans. Contact me directly. Take the arrow and move over my name to see my e-mail address. If you have access to steel, then cost is zero. Philip.

I received your e-mail and replied with plans and pictures. Let me know if you did not receive. One thing you can do here is not hide your e-mail address. Philip.

Each respondent has addressed the various available hitch set-ups. One not mentioned is the v-bar that was used with the Dearborn combine and cornpicker. I'm a firm beliver in a very solid-fixed hitch to pull or push any load.
A triangle is the strongest geometric shape. The v-bar, 11 hole cross bar and the hitch braces up to the top link rocker are the strongest hitch combination and most stationary on an N.
In 51 years, this set up has never failed me even when pulling 6 tons of grain with an 8N. I agree that it takes a few minutes to install and remove it, BUT...it beats getting hurt or hurting someone else.
To remove it, I loosen the two clamp bolts on the lift arms, pull the linch pins and remove it.
Be safe.

For those of your with greater safety concerns than me, the receiver hicth that I made can also be used with vertical stays to maintain height, as seen in this picture. Philip.

It is my safty conserns that for me I WOULD NEVVER use one of those hitches. It puts the hitch point to far back to transfer the weight all off the front tires so you have NO control of stearing, no if it was modified so that the hole unit sets inside the lift arms with the reciever no farther back than the hitch hole in the v bar then it would be a lot saffer but for some loads that 11 hole drawbar is still too far back and will tip the front of the tractor up off the ground, some day somebody is going to get killed because of one of these hitches because of lack of control

Dont be so over dramatic, it gets old. I do have pleanty of control over my steering. It all depends on how much tongue load you have. Anyone can get killed if they are careless. Philip.

I have a v-bar as well. Did not know it was used with combine. Many situations benefit from not allowing the ball to raise up, mainly for safety reasons. Some situations it is nice to use your hydraulics to move the ball up and down. This was my first receiver hitch using the v-bar. Works well but it is VERY heavy and time consuming to install. This is all bolt on, I did not want to modify the v-bar. Philip.

I think this is a slick setup for a ball-hitch.

Link

The cool thing is that you can use the hydraulics to raise your trailer without even getting off the seat, and with no cranking. Lift and go.

I agree with Dell I would get the 3 piece swinging drabar kit I just bought one for the 8n I recently bought. This site has them for sale under the parts section. We used the style that hase the wide bar that hooks to the 3 pt arms and the 2 straps that go from it up to the top link hook up for years at the cemetery on the dirt trailer and other tasks but reall the regular drawbar that you get with that 3 piece kit is alot safer really plus its nice because you rarely would need to take it off and when you do its as simple as one linch pin underneath. And you dont have to hook up and un hook the drawbar all the time like you do with the 3 point drawbar set up. One thing that scares me is what would happen if a man was useing the 3 point style draw bar and something happend to the point where that hook at the top link those arms would be aimed directly at the operator in the seat. This is my opinion on this. I hope I havent carryed on to much :>) R Wyler

CW..... ....while the 11-hole drawbar will lift and pull trailer ball hitches (if you gitta drawbar anti-rotation LOCK), I suggest you gitt the under the 8N diffy "swinging drawbar". This is a fixxed height towing ball (just like yer pick'em-up) but it tows from a fixxed point that allows you to back-up while the 11-hole drawbar will involuntairly lift when reversing. You doubt? Go out and surprize yer self, the 3-point lower links are gravity down and you can lift'em all the way up to the top of the 3-point lift.

Gitt the removeable swinging drawbar kit and install it up so the crank will knock yer knees, instead of down and crack yer ankle..... ...Dell

TSC or other such stores have them - cat 1 drawbar. Be sure to get (or make) a drawbar lock to keep your drawbar from swiveling when you use a ball.

Its just an 11 hole cross drawbar. Anyone you ask about one, will know what you mean, they are very common.
