Well, after all the posts about steering gearboxes I decided I had better top mine off. It is rather warm today (in the 30's), so why not tinker with the 8n? I bought a squeeze quart of 90W gear oil and left it inside over night so it would flow better. I then cut a 12" length of 3/8" OD clear vinyl tubing and stuck it on the end of the oil container. I was able to squeeze the container with one hand while holding the tube into the fill hole with the other. The fill plug was easy to find (nearly behind the oil pan of air cleaner and a tad to left). It took about 2/3 of the bottle so I assume the gearbox was pretty dry. It steers easier already and when I change the kingpin bushings I expect a really sweet-handlin' tractor. I will keep an eye on it and if it leaks too fast then I will try the grease trick.

Here's the question part;
My steeing wheel appears to be spinning somewhat on the shaft. It makes an awful sqeaky, scrunchy sound and I have tried tightening the nut to no avail. It really happens most when i make a quick, hard turn. It is slighty better since I lubed the gearbox but still happens. Is this a common probem and is there an easy solution or do I need a new steering wheel? I was wondering if some type of a lockwasher under the existing washer could help keep it in place? I look forward to your solutions.

wheel spins 2 or 3 revolutions to the left or right no responce, then it locks up. Pulled top bearing, regreased everything, checked idlers, shafts, so what can be the problem? Is something jammed up in the middle of the box? Is there a quicker fix rather than pulling out transfer box? And do i have to split the moter to get into that?

I dont think that you need to split the motor from the trans to change out a gearbox. It does sound like your gearbox is severly out of adjustment or more likely needs to be rebuilt. You replied to a posting that I left on Sunday. I would advise posting as a new thread so all experts catch it today and can comment.

There is a bearing of sorts in the top of the steering column just below the steering wheel. It is probably shot or at least just dry. That might be some of the squeak you are hearing.

Paul,
The loose feeling of the steering wheel is usually caused by play in the sectors. Them is the shafts the run sideways inside yer steering box. Put yer feet on the steering arms that connect to the drag links. Do you have some free play in the wheel then hit solid resistance? If so, yer sectors wanna be adjusted.

Thanks. I will give that a whirl as it probably needs to be checked anyway, but would that really create that sound that I described? I wonder if the splines on either the steering wheel or input shaft are worn? I was just out pushing some snow around and the problem did get much better since I added the gear oil. I dont know if the gearbox was making the noise or if I am having to yank less hard on the wheel and it is therefore not making as much noise. Anyhow, I will check that sector play as part of the process of elimination

When you pull the wheel.. lube that little top insert tube bearing as well.

I would pull the steering wheel and inspect the splines on the shaft and the wheel.
