My 1939 9N Serial #9N-8801 PTO seal is leaking.
After researching this forums archives and my manuals, I understand this is a rather simple procedure. Is the seal part #9n-727 and is there more than one different type seal? Where will I be able to get the correct seal? I understand that I need to park the tractor with the front end lower so the oil will not drain out, remove the four bolts, pull the shaft assembly out, remove the pin and carter key, and then I can get to the seal. AFTER I PULL THE SHAFT ASSEMBLY OUT IS THERE ANYTHING IN THE HYD. PUMP THAT CAN DROP DOWN NOT CAUSING THE SHAFT ASSEMBLY TO GO BACK IN PROPERLY?

I see where occassionaly there is a problem getting the shaft out. Any tricks here? Please advise as you have in the past. Leon in NW Fl.

9N8801,
There is a chance that your PTO has been replaced. Won"t be sure until you pull it. What Jay posted does not apply to the 39 thru 43 PTO. Like you said, pull the cotter pin and straight pin. Sometimes the PTO shaft will get twisted and you won"t be able to remove it. Don"t sweat that if ya don"t have to. Yer 9N 727 is the only seal listed in the Master Parts Catalog. Less ya want to count the 9N 4129 gasket that goes under the 4 bolt assembly. If it takes ya more than an hour, including a coffee break, yer goofin off. Enjoy.

Here is ZANE's antidote for the leaking PTO seal

PTO seal replace.
If you already have the pto shaft out of the tractor you can remove the snapring that is on the inside of the bearing hub.Forcefully drop the implement end of the pto shaft and hub down on a piece of solid hard wood a couple of times and the hub will fall off. Then you can knock out the seal from the inside out and then install the new seal before you put the hub back on the bearing. If the shaft assembly is still in the tractor you can pull the seal out by fashioning a seal puller by welding a big sheet metal screw to the end of a steel rod and bend a 90 deg hook on the other end and before you put the screw into the edge of the seal you should put a large piece of pipe over the home make tool to use as a knocker and then you can jerk the seal out with the home make tool. If you have an impact tool for body work it is even better.Just weld a screw to a nut that will fit the impact tool threaded end. This way it is not necessary to pull the pto shaft to replace the seal.

P.S. there is nothing that will drop down or fall out,the PTO shaft slide's through the center of the hydraulic pump. You replace it the same way you removed it.If by chance it has seen abused and you cannot remove the shaft with gentle persuasion ("Becareful",remember this is cast iron) post back here and someone will be glad to assist or you can try searching the archive's for help. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Jay 2NSC

There seems to be some confusion in the parts catalogs for a 1939 but Victor seal #46062 should fit. Try a Napa store near you and see if it matches up with your old one.
