How hard is it to do a brake job on a 2N? I think it needs axle seals too. It is my Dad's. Niether of us has worked on this before.

The Ford "N" series has drums brakes like a car? I figure it must be simpler than it would be for my Farmall-A(could use brakes too...). From looking at the 2N, it does not appear to have final drives on it.

My Dad keeps hesitating, but I figure it can't be much different than drum brakes on a car or pickup. The axle seals make me wonder though... Seems to me it should be an afternoon job???

It's not difficult but I would suggest getting the I&T FO-4 manual if you are going to do it. The drums are attached to the hub on the 2N so it has to come apart in big pieces that are fairly heavy. The sure seals are the way to go and as said grease the heck out of them. If you want to replace the bearings it is not complicated but they will take some work and homemade/special tools/rigging as they don't just pop in and out. You can search the archives probably under "sure seal" and do some research. the manual is available on this site and probably even locally in your neighborhood.

No the 8N is a little different setup on hubs axles, seals etc. It is still not difficult, just a basic drum brake setup.

Only problem with brakes is the springs are strong. I just was not strong enough to stretch the springs so I took my brake assemblies to a friend's auto shop and he put the shoes on the plate for me..On the seals, use Sure Seals..Be sure to grease the outside bearings before installing Sure Seals because with SS the bearings will no longer get oil from the rear end. My Dad's 2N has had SS for years and they work great. I installed SS on mine several months ago. Hope this helps.

You have just a few bolts to remove the axle and outside hub. Biggest part is cleaning the old grease out of them. This is what I did to these a long time ago. Simple job but heavy parts to take off. Mark H.

brake jos is realatively easy, the only problem i had was when i broke a spring but the local auto parts store had a wide selection of springs and found almost exact match and cheap
