A few days ago I posted about loss of compression after doing a valve job.
I was directed to check for a loose or missing keeper, I did, it (they) had slipped off one of the valves, reinstalled them and all was good.

After putting everything back together, we ran it for a half hour, retorqued the head and other bolts, and called it good.

Today, after installing the hood, and rest of the parts, we ran it for 5 minutes.
At first, it ran okay, then started missing.

Pulled the valve covers and sure enough, another set of keepers had "slipped".

This could get old quick!!

When I ordered the new valves, the fellow asked me if they were rotating or not, being new to the inside of an N, I said 'dunno...he said I'll send you non rotating valves.

After they arrived, it was clear there was a difference.
Some of the old valves had a little cup, and a different style keeper than the new ones.
We used the new keepers that came with the valves, sort of a V shaped affair, 2 piece.
We also used the new guides that came with them.

The lifter has an adjuster on it, which we used to set clearances.

Should we have installed the little cups, or is there something I'm missing with regard to keeping the keepers on?

Thanks

Rob

If you did not change the spring retainers then thats the problem you are use'n free rotat'n retainers on non F/R valves that do not lock the valve keepers in place. You need 4 retainers for non rotat'n valves. I have'em iff'n ya need'em.

Hobo,

Thanks!

Are they the "C" clip style I removed from the old ones?

free rotat'n type will not work on non rotat'n type valves, the type you need fit the wedge lock
thats what I have for non rotar'n valves or if you kin locate'em # is 8BA6514 retainer and you will see they wedge lock the keeper in you will need four of'em for the exhaust. Also the retainer is different if you have split valves guides and change over to the solide guide and that goes for the intake two. If you had the soilde guide then you will only need four of'em for the exhaust. Save yer free rotar'n style cuzz they are expensive.

Hobo,

Took me a while to figure out what you were talking about...mostly since I didn't realize the retainers were different sizes.

But once I had a closer look at all the parts, it was an easy fix, we have a NH. dealer just down the road, 92 cents each.

Runs very well now.

Thank you for the help!

Rob
