Let me see if I get this right, you said you heard it running over the phone (phone must of been the way)and when he dropped it of the traler(must of been a strong guy)you heard it running. Now it won't crank. Wrong key??? Wrong fule??? Wrong tractor??? Wrong Bar??? The big guy STOLE the starter??? Good luck.

Potato Headie - Go ahead and pull all the imaginary stumps you want rather than pulling everyones collective leg. How do I know - well potatoes don't have stumps!

I am cutting trees to plant more potatoes. I will have stumps in the spring i will have to burn them if i cant use the tractor and it will take a long time.

Follow this link. Shows a pic of an 8N (does your tractor look anything like this?) Below that is a pic that shows where the serial# is located.

Eddie, Pulling stumps with this tractor is very dangerous. It literally takes one second for the tractor to spin over and crush the driver. Many, many good men have killed themselves doing this. See the attached link for one recent story of someone who nearly crushed himself last week.

Use the right tool for the right job.

As for your mechanical issues ... you'd do well to find someone in your area who is familiar with ford tractors. Have him over for a beer and ask him to show you around your new tractor.

Once you learn the basics, you'll be much better off.

Good luck, be safe.

Potato Eddie..... ...its hard to put a price on stupidity. Consider your mis-adventure cheap schooling. I'm gonna assume you realize that the ignition key does only that, and the BIG STARTER button by the tranny shifter is what makes the starter motor turn the engine.

ALL N-Tractors were 4-cylinder flathead gasoline engines from 1939 to 1952 when Ford stopped making 8N tractors. Ford continued to make OHV gasoline engines until 1972, when they started their world tractor series with 3-cylinder DIESEL engines.

Howsomevers, iff'n you really have a gasoline engine Ford tractor and you putt diesel fuel in the tank, GUESS WHAT? Just DRAIN ALL the fuel outta the tank and refill with fresh gasoline and change your sparkies to NEW AutoLite AL-437's. You ain't hurt 'nuttin'.

Howsomevers, iff'n its a real diesel engine and it don't start with real diesel. I haven't gotta clue. DON'T USE ether quick start..... ....respectfully, Dell

Cheep schooling. ron told me this was the only desel 8n left and it was 7200. it is suppused to be real strong = to a 80hp but in a small pakage. he wont retern my calls i think he is out of town. i cut an electric cord to jump from tha batterie and the starter cranks over but still wont start. i think that button on the bottum is for high beem lights.

Are you sure it is an 8n?
Because 8ns run on gas. as for your 2nd problem, if it is an 8n, you need to turn the key to the on position, and push the button by the shifter for the tractor to even turnover. Try it and let us know.
I dont think that you have bought the right tractor for pulling sumps, it will flip before you know it.
