o.k to start with hydraulics off??

Forgive my ignorance,but it is o.k. to start the motor on the N with the hydrauilic lift cover off and the right rear axle out ,if the pto is off or will I have a bath?I want to check the motor and am not ready to put the back half together yet.Thanks

if the tranny is in neutral and the PTO is assuredly out of gear and your clutch is not tight, then you shouldn't have any movement after the tranny. MAKE DARN SURE that your tractor is blocked up good. REAL GOOD. then make sure again. Chock all of the wheels and then crank 'er up. I would also make sure that I am not sitting on or very near the tractor when cranking.

Jeb and 8nN,
I"d suggest tying, blocking and/or holding the clutch down so nothing aft of it will be rotating. Never stuck my nose in the tranny to see how much commotion the input shaft makes, but you can easily eliminate another moving part.
