oil cap blowback

While starting the 48' I noticed as it was turning over puffs of white smoke(or thats the best way I can describe it)coming out of the oil fill cap.I never noticed it before,is it normal?

Like Ray sez.....it's normal, provided that it's as the engine warms up & it's condensation out of the crankcase. But, if it's blowing smoke out of the oil breather all the time, and most noticably when it's under load, it's from blow-by on the rings. And always use a thermostat.

It is common to see crankcase vapors come out of the oil filler on the N. That is the only crankcase vent, where blowby from combustion vents. "White smoke" would probably be moisture venting and is to be expected during cold weather and a cold engine. Important to run a thermostat so to get the engine warm enough to boil the moisture and vapors off.

Those were made a few years before PCV was required to stop crankcase emissions!
