A friend was cleaning out their father's garage and let me take some things for helping out.

I picked up about 5 cases of motor oil, from 5-30 to 40 wt. all in sealed quarts.

The stuff is old...8-12 years old, maybe more.

I wouldn't think there is anything wrong with it...am I right in thinking it's fine to use in my engines?

...no I am not planning on throwing it out...

TY

From what I have read, oil does not begin to deteriorate until it is exposed to the atmosphere. As long as the quarts are sealed it has indefinate shelf life.

Long shelf life is not good for the additives in the oil but the oil itself will not age. With that said, your old stored oil is still way better than the oil that the old 8n engine was originally designed to run with. I would use it in in the tractor but perhaps not in a newer car that I cared about. The most important thing about oil is to keep it changed regularly.

When we sold the family airport, I had 2 55 gal. drums of Shell 30 wt. AD Aviation Oil. We have been using this oil in our equipment for the past 30 years. Never seemed to have any problems.

I purchased at super bargain price 20 x 24 quarts of 10W30 Extra from Esso/Exxon in 1977 and I still use it in the 8N; there is a small deposit of additives at the bottom of the can and I mix thouroughly the can before adding to 8N; no harm noticed after 27-28 years.

It will be ok - go ahead and use it. If you don't want to - then drop it off in SE Nebraska and I'll use it! :^)

What kind of quarts? If they are in the old round cans ,and not plastic . The old cans are worth more to collectors than the oil in them.
