hello all, I have been off the forum for a while, and also been away from tractors for as long , well fixing them anyway, been in the process of building a new house, I need a break so I brought in one of my fixing tractors, it is a 1946 2n,almost all original, the throttle quadrant still has all the teeth,,, anyway, this tractor turns over, but I did not want to crank on her too much since it has been sitting for a few yrs, I did not want to scar the piston walls from lack of oil, so I put some oil in all spark plug holes, It is dripping out the carb and the muffler, which needs to be repalced,, would this indicate to me that one or more of the exhaust valves may be stuck open or would this be normal for it to seep out these areas, thanks for the help in advance.pat

Pat..... ..while it is good to pre-oil your longtime no-run engine to prevent piston scuffing, more people find they have "stuck rings and valves" from varnished oil. Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) works as good as enny to unstick stuck rings (low compression will prevent starting) Since MMO is a solvent, it will kinda slip down the piston walls into the oilpan. (to be removed when you drain yer 6qts of oil and change filter) Remember OIL IS CHEAP, change it often.

The other problem with lontime no-run engines is (are you ready for this?) gummed up carburator jets from evaporated gasoline. DRAIN ALL your gasoline and start with fresh. And don't be too surprized about carb problems.

Replace ALL your sparkies and ignition points when you have all the other stuff taken care of. Modern no-lead gasoline leaves invisable deposits on the sparkies center insulators and can leak sparkies away before they've been forced to jump the gap..... .....Dell, self-appointed sparkie-meister

Thanks all for the replies,Yea I planned on replacing the carb with another one i have this one looks like it needs a rebuikld,it will get one later, I am going to change all the electrical since I have the hood off and it will be easier to do it all now, I forgot about the MMO deal, that may be the next step just to be sure, also I will probably take the valve covers off to look at the valves, I remeber one I had ran great until I was ready to sell than wouldnt start, went through checks for everything then thought about the valves one exhaust was rusted open and fixed it she fired nicely, pat

On the flathead N engines the spark plug hole is directly above the valves. It would be a fore gone conclusion that SOME of those cylinders had an intake or exhaust valve sitting open when the tractor was shut off. If you really wanted to be effective, remove the side valve covers, rotate the engine by hand until one cylinder has both the exhaust/intake valve closed, then pour the oil in that cylinder only. Repeat for the remaining cylinders. Or, use some sort of flexible tube to "drop" the oil directly into the cylinders.

Good luck,
Dan

How much oil did you put in the cylinders" Way less than a teaspoon per cylinder would be pleanty to lube them up.
