A couple of months ago I rebuilt my distributor and things were going ok, (8n-front mount) and then last week after clearing snow from the driveway, it was backfiring when I put a load on it. I put it in nuetral and set the throttle at idle speed and after about 30 seconds it died and wouldnt restart. Any Ideas would help!!

I was pulling a sapling stump from the front with my side mount 8N (not recommended at all)
and I gave it a jerk and she shut right off like I turned off the key. The points had slipped from my excessive misuse of the tractor. Point is, points can slip, especially when newly installed. Gap em' again and see if it helps.---Rob

Thanks for the quick response, I will give it a try. the trouble I have is that I have a loader on the front end and there is very little room to work on the front mounted distributor. wish me luck.

i've found that using an external star washer keeps everything from slipping.

Randy..... ..yer points have slipped shut and you have no more sparkies.

New points are known to slip.

You do know the eazy way to work on your frontmount distributor is 15-min 2-bolt job, don't you? Un-clip yer 4-nipple cap and letter dangle. Remove your 2-distributer mounting bolts and take yer frontmount distributor in to the kitchen table. Points gap is 0.015". Re-installation is a reversal of the removal, except just finger start your 2-bolts and then turn your rotor until the drive tangs drops into the OFF-SET drive slot in the camshaft end. Now tighten yer 2-bolts 18 ft/lbs. And reclip yer crabcap. Simple, eh?..... .....respectfully, Dell yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

I'm betting either your points slipped and the gap is no longer correct or your distributor may have gotten wet inside. I'd open it up for a look.

My 2n has had those symptoms when it got wet.

I thank you all for the quick response, and yes Del I do know about the two bolt method, just not too much room with the loader on the front.
