I recently aquired a 48 8N that is having some lift problems. Thanks to the information on this board, I believe it is going to be a worn cam follower pin. I have the FO4 book, but it doesn"t go into much detail on the replacement of the pin. I assume that the top plate has to be removed for this. Will I have to apply heat or anything of that sort to remove the pin from it"s location? This will be my first venture inside the case and would appreciate any advice you can give.

I sell an adjusting jig for the 8N lift that has picturs and instructions along with a new cam follower/dowel pin.

See the link below for more information

I have the adjusting jig and have used it once with great success. I wanted to use it again and could not find it. I was really thinking about calling you to buy another one until I found that son and 2 grandsons had moved it while working on their Ford (Jake) lawn tractor restos. Too many projects, not enough (organized) space.

No heat required, just a good pin punch the same size. If you aren't going to pull the arm completely out, cup the pin with a deep well socket just a little larger than the pin to support the arm while you punch it out from the other side (towards the socket) so that the pin ends up on the inside of the socket. This will help keep you from bending the arn while you are driving out the pin.

Good luck,
Dan

While I'm no expert like many others here on this board, I did just replace the cam follower pin on my '50 8N last night after finding it was badly worn.

I used a 6" C-clamp and a deep well socket to press the pin out 1/2 way (sort of a poor man's arbor press). Then I finished removing the pin with the punch. I think using the C-clamp initially saved some wear and tear on the linkage. It is still a good idea to brace the components when using the punch as suggested earlier.
