I"ve finally got the 8N running after a complete overhaul but..... ..... .. She"s very hard to start without bypassing the dash mounted resistor.I"ve put in new wiring harness, switch, etc. I know I shouldn"t bypass the resister but she doesn"t have enough ooomph to start otherwise. Could the coil already be bad enough that I"m not getting good spark? Getting about 2 volts without bypass which I assume is about normal. So it must be coil, right?

What kind of shape is your battery in ?? I would think the new rebuild is going to be kind of tight and if your battery is not up to snuff the draw from the starter may not leave enough for the coil. Let us know how you make out.

Rich..... ..as BJ sez, 2 volts to the top terminal of the 6v squarecan frontmount ignition coil is WAY TOO LOW. (want to see about 3-3.5v) And iff'n yer gittin' 2v after bypassing the "infamous ballast resistor" you've got another secrert hidden resistor somewheres. And while it could be poor battery post connections or grounds caused by new paint, I kinda dissmiss that because you can gittchur engine to turn over and start. Bad Battery connections would prevent that.

I suspect you've gott the infamous BAD IGNITION SWITCH GUTTZ syndrome. You doubt? Prove me wrong by by-passing the ignition switch at the "T" terminal block underneath yer ampmeter..... ..Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Two volts cold at the coil is no where near enough to start. Assuming you have a stock six volt positive ground breaker point system you need to find where the voltage is going. Resistors usually fail like light bulbs--they work or they don't--so in this case I would first make sure all of your connections are "clean bright and tight" and that you have two gauge or better battery cables with good clean grounds. If that didn't fix I would change out the resistor.

Your mileage may vary
