8N starter removeing

Ok I've seen a lot of post about removeing the starter and something about the bolts. I've had an 8N since the early 80 and have never had to remove the starter so what makes it so hard to do. Just picked up an 8N and I need to remove the starter because as soon as the engine fires it kicks the starter out. Are you guys saying the bolts that hold the starter togeather and also the ones that mount it to the tractor or what?? I'm sure I could figure it out but I would prefer to have some info so as to make it simple.

I wish I asked these questions befor I pulled mine. Now I have a mes of brushes and springs that I'm having one heck of a time putting back together.

Like Steve sez, just put two nuts on the long bolts and the starter won't come apart on you. To make it a lot easier to get it out, loosen the two bolts holding the oil filter canister to the block. And, if you have the OEM brass block drain petcock, you might just drain the block & take it off. Some folks can get the starter off w/o removing it, but I've never been that lucky. When you put the starter back on, make sure the starter case & the block are free of paint/rust to insure a good ground. If you've got the time, take a grinder & grind out the 2 o'clock position on the starter opening in the block in an egg shape; it will make removal the next time easier.

Guess what - they are the same bolts. The advice normally goes like this:

When you get the mounting bolts undone immediately put a nut on the end of them so your starter won't fall apart. I think its a 3/16 nut. HTH

Thanks that is what I was thinking but wasn't sure, never had to pull my starter so I never worryed about it till the other day when I got another one with starter problems

Well I'm about blind reading and reading. Archives are to a blind man what pine pollen is to them allergies you get about this time of year.
It seems that pulling an 8-n starter has no definite reasoning. I like the grind a hole idea. Maybe some nitro!
Some have posted to nut up the starter to keep it from falling apart, while yet another took it apart and still cant 'wiggle' it out. Perhaps we're leaving out the "hand made" aspects of the times, and people complain about working on new vehicles!
Lets ask it this way.
If I were to slip the starter part way out, vice grip the starter shaft up close to the housing hole and cut it in two, thus preventing the troublesome bendix from dropping into the bell housing, IS THERE A FRONT BENDIX STARTER TO REPLACE IT WITH? Like on a normal Ford. If so, WHAT IS IT? Got a number? 12 volt of course.
If this is a bit of a (*****) to restoration buffs, it could possibly be a positive. Sort of like, though I still have and use the 100% original COLD STEEL bottom seat (with a cushion) every rebuilder I've met loves the shocks that are under it!
The chrome heat shield on the stack, shocks under the seat, shiney 12 volt system, and co-ordinated wheel lugs, if I can find a real starter and get it mounted up, I'm going to have me some 8N-Rod decals made up for the fenders!
