PTO Shaft fit

I just purchased the newer inch and 3/8 conversion shaft. I cant get it to slide in like my old one came out. The shaft is 30 and 7/8 inch long so it should fit. I can get it to slide in untill the last 1/2 inch then the pto shifter will jam. What do I need to do to get it to slide all the way in? I have used emery paper on the spline and the small step up just behind the spline. Is there some trick I'm missing? Open to suggestions? advice from some one who has seen this would be greatly appreciated.

I believe I have solved this problem. I removed the pto shifter asssembly after droping the hydraulic unit. Assembly was in execellent shape. I then tapped the assembly on to the shaft then tapped it off again. Took shaft out into the sun light and inspected it for marks. I could see light marks where the splines were rubing. I filed the sides of the splines to remove the marks. Unit now slides home free and the shifter is smooth. It seems that the new shaft needed one more pass with the broach. Hindsight tells me I should not have used heavy grease to expose drag spots I should have drove into town and got a can of blueing It would have saved a lot work. Thanks to those that provided suggestions.

Did the old shaft come out easy/ did it have any twist or distortion on the rear spline? No? I'd guess you don't have the shift collar lined up. Pull the shifting dog cover plate and play with it.

I dont know for sure if this will help but if you have your oil drained you might try loosining the bolts that hold up your hyd pump so it will have a little wiggle room.

Sounds like the little shifter collar in the PTO shifter has dropped down or so. Also, may want to try rotating the shaft and wiggling it a bit and see if you can line up the splines in the shift collar. It may be helpful to remove one of the inspection plates to see exactly what is going on in there.

I have my side cover off on the dip stick side so I can look in but I cant see what it is hanging up on. I a have tried to put heavy grease on the shaft to get a visual mark where it might be hanging up but learned nothing. Maby the bushing in side is sliping down. Can a person loosen the guide where it bolts to the transmission without creating another problem. I can see the stepped part of the shaft where it enters the pump. The PTO lever works free as it should untill the last 1/2 inch?
