I have a 1950 8N.(6v) I believe it has a bad coil(tractor runs for 20 min. then runs rough with very little power). I would like to convert to 12v. I am not a electrical gooroo, but I do have a degree in engineering. I would like to all this converting at the same time.(new coil,altenate etc.)
1.) Can a novice do this without much problem?
2.) Should I go to a electronic ignition or stay the course with points and condensor?

I know there will be many differing opinions.

Let the fighting begin!!! I would appreciate any suggestions.

Whether you convert or not get it working right before you start. Trouble that is hard to find now will be twice as hard to diagnose if you have to wonder if it is something to do with the conversion.

Your mileage may vary

To answer your question,yes, this can be done by a novice.Since you already have a engineering degree that indicates you have some smarts. There are several fine articles about converting to 12 Volts on this very site. Look over to the left under "Articles". You should find all the information you need. As to weather or not you should go to Electronic Ignition or not, this is for you to decide. You may want to investigate an Electronically Assisted Ignition. Thats what I did and it works great and is very cheap, comparatively. Do some reading and then form your opinion. Good luck and have fun. James

Rex..... ....there are 4-common runtime issues with N-Tractors.

1) runs good for about 1 minute and quits. Bad ignition condenser; not your stated problem
2) runs good for about 5 minutes and quits; clogged fuel filters; not your stated problem
3) runs for about 1 hr and quits; restarts after overnite cooling; bad ignition coil; NOT yer stated problem 4) runs for about 15 minutes and quits; restarts after cooling-off an hour;
Sound like yer stated problem? BAD IGNITION SWITCH GUTTZ. You doubt? Next time, use a jumper wire with alligator clippie to by-pass the ignition switch terminals at the "T" termial block underneath yer ammeter behind the dash..... .....respectfully, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Rex;

Go with 12 volt and electronic ignition.
