I just finished rebuilding the carb on my 51 8n and I adjusted it per the step by step instructions on one of the web sites and it seems to be flooding it self out before it gets a chance to get started. As soon as I turn the gas on at the sediment bowl it starts dripping out the air intake or the bolt at the bottom of the carb I'm not sure. I changed the settings back to what they were before rebulding it and it still doesn't work. Its driving me crazy. Here are the settings as it sits right know.

little screw-2 1/4 turns out
big screw-2 1/2 turns out
float is set to 1/4" at the back by needle and about 10-15 deg. angle.

Zeigler..... ....gittchur floatvalve done right. It is what stops the gravity flow gastank from overfilling your carb bowl. (and by-the-way, that bowl holds enuff gas for the engine to run for about 5 minutes)

You cleaned yer carb and set all yer screws back to where they were. Thats NO HELP. You've upset all the mixtures by cleaning the carb. Do it like both Ford and Marvel/Schebler say. Set BOTH the down-pointing main jet and the side-pointing idlemixture to 1-turn out before starting the engine. I set my down-pointing mainjet to 1-1/2 turns and LEAVITT!!!!

I then adjust the side-pointing idlemixture for maximum rpms, NOT smoothest idle, MAX rpms, understand? Then adjust the behind idle-setscrew for about 400rpms and re-adjust the side-pointing idle mixture for max rpms again. (I do this 3-times) Remember, the side-pointing idlemix is BASSKWARDS, out for lean, IN for INRICH. My idlemix usually ends up about 3/8 turn..... ....Dell

I had the same problem. I split the carb with it still on the tractor and checked the float by raising it with my hand to see if it shut the fuel off like it should. had a bad pin on the float. Make sure you remove the idle adjust needle befor splitting the carb so you don"t break it.

if gas drips out from anywhere other than the nut on the bottom rest assured that your float/needle and seat is not working properly thats is the only thing that lets gas through on ms carbs.
just my $.02
solution: split it, pull the float pin out, lift float out, look to see if your needle is solid or has a small rubber tip on it, if the tip is in good shape look at the seat (where the tip goes into) take an air hose to the inlet fitting (the part that your line from the tank hooks to and give it a little air [about 1 sec.]), then put it all back together should work just fine

If the carb is overflowing gas before you even crank the engine, you have a problem in the inlet valve needle and seat area. Turning the idle or main jet adjusting screws will have NO effect on that.

Possible problems (you say you set the float level)...

Dirt in needle and seat

Defective or damaged needle and seat

Seat not tightened TIGHT into the upper carb body, with the little gasket in place (allowing gas to flow into the float bowl even when the float pushes the needle "SHUT".

Heavy float (leaks and has gas inside)

Bent or sticking float (touches float bowl and "binds up"
