The first lift cover I broke had just a little play, but I wanted to replace the bushings anyway, broke cover #1. Even after getting a replacement cover and new bushings it still had the same amount of play. This last one I had to replace the lift cam arm( it was wore out baddddd, well that became broke cover #2. Hey Jeb you makin fun o Me? :>)

Naw, not pokin at cha!

I thought that judging by the pictures, that yours was cracked before you got it but was still held together a little bit (not cracked all the way through) and then just broke the rest of the way when you took it off this time. Are you now saying that YOU did break it??? Your boy is gonna put you on restriction!

:=)

Jeb

If you look back a day or so, there was a post by JimNC about how his lift cover housing broke in half. This is a COMMON occurance that happens when you try to press the rock shaft out and the rocker arm (in the middle of the shaft) doesn"t move. You end up destroying your lift housing. Unless it is a significant amount of out-of-round play like say 1/16", i would leave it alone. You don"t get a lot of splashing up around that area, so leakage wouldn"t be too bad.

Amen! When I had the lift apart a few months ago on my '52 8N to replace the lift cylinder, piston, and seals, I pondered replacing the shaft bushings. But once I took a hard look at it, I changed my mind fast. It looked like I would end up breaking something just trying to get it apart.

I cleaned out the sump real good, refilled with 90 wt. GL1, and replaced the shifter boot. Since I'm in the process of building a new house where the N stays and don't have a garage or barn to park it in, it's out in the weather all the time. The rear oil still is as clear as the day I put it in there; no sign of any moisture leaking in. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You might tear something else up fixin' it. GA Jim
