Cylinder Head Bolts Re-orquing

Due to various problems restarting after rebuild (52, front mount), I wound up replacing spark plug wires. To do this, I removed the harness in which they reside. This is mounted on 2 of the bolts that hold the cylinder head down (seems like a design flaw, but it is the way it is)....I had some leaking out of the holes (since we had optimistically filled her with antifreeze, months ago), but I re-tightened them with a box (not torque) wrench, and no leaks now...seems OK...running, probably still has a carb issue (too lean) but have I created a problem with the head gasket?? should I be OK if I retorque these 2 bolts to specs?? I read I need to retorque all (in proper sequence)after running for an hour, so maybe it will all come out in the wash?? Basically asking if I created a problem by taking two bolts out of the head...thanks..Rusty

You probably don't have a 52 frontmount....frontmounts were last made in early 1950. What you probably do have is a fat finger! :) Crank it up, get it to operating temp for an hour then re-torque the head bolts in the proper sequence (from the center outward) using a torque wrench. Chances are you haven't hurt anything.

Rusty..... ..heres a tip, the frontmount distributor has a 1-terminal squarecan ignition coil mounted on a 4-nipple distributor.

ONLY the later 50-52 8N's have the sidemount distributor has a seperate ROUNDCAN 1-nipple, 2-terminal ignititon coil that feeds a 5-nipple crownhead distributor. Caution: sidemount 8N-Engines can be retro-fitted to earlier frontmount 9N/2N/8N's..... .yer welcome, Dell the self-appointed sparkie-meister

Thanks Dell...location of my distributor, with square can sitting on top is not in question...thanks in large part to your posts, I know it pretty well now...[maybe year of this N I was told is wrong...maybe a hybrid...don't matter]...in this thread I just wanted to ask if removing two of the middle head bolts was gonna cause me a problem, since there is such a special order for torquing them...R

Rusty..... ..ok, ya gottsa frontmount. Pull yer headbolts or headnuts and bolt yer sparkie tube back on. Torque studnuts to 55 ft/lbs, headbolts to 65 ft/lbs. You should NOT have any headwarping/headgasketleaking issues since the 2-bolts are NOT adjacent. Check and re-torque ALL (per schedule) after about 30 minutes of runn-time on a warm engine..... ...Dell
