Took the tractor out for some bush-hogging this evening and have some questions.

1) Why won't my hydraulics work without the PTO being engaged?
2) Is it ok to bush hog in 2nd gear? I was told I should only do it in first.

Thanks,
N8NO

As for the question about hydrolics, thats the way the tractor was designed.

As to the 2'nd gear question, i'd use 1st. If you take the cover off the trans., you'll see that second gear is thinner than the others.

One thing i do to cut down on the shock of hitting a stump or big rock in any gear, is to drill out the shear pin/bolt that connects the shaft to the gearbox shaft on the bushhog. I'd rather replace a shear pin than a gear.

Have fun!

search the board for "2nd gear" and you'll turn up the discussions on this subject. The consensus is (paraphrasing Zane) that if you KNOW the field is clear and never hit anything with the hog, you should be ok, but if you hit anything you'll likely clobber 2nd gear because it is weaker than the others.

I mow in 1st. If I lost a gear during mowing it would cause me more downtime than the time saved mowing in 2nd.

Safety reminder: Are you using a ORC (over running clutch) on the PTO ? If not you should be.

The hydraulic pump is driven from the PTO Shaft. 2nd gear is the weakest and therefore some recommend not using this gear for heavy work.

This subjects lends itself to another question from another new guy on the block... what is the best gear to run for a finish mower? I use a 6 foot finish mower with my 8N and sometimes run it in 3rd for long strips on smooth ground. My Tach cable is missing and I need a new one. So.. I don't know how many RPMs I'm running and what is the best rate for mowing.

to paraphrase a fairly long article by Ron Meyer at Colorado State Univ

"For these lighter operations a substantial amount of fuel can be saved by shifting to a faster gear and slowing engine speed to maintain field speed, or 'gear up and throttle down'"

one test--engine speed reduced by 26% resulted in fuel saving of 19%

your mileage may vary
