Hello All, Im Patrick Located in the High Desert of Southern California. I've been observing and learning from this list for a couple of years now and have remained silent up to now...
The archives and the search option have never failed me for my repairs on my 9n. From Dell's resistor trick and clean and bright & tight to God knows what else which can fail at any moment.
Im looking at an engine rebuild in the most definate way as far as I can tell. Last night I finally took the readings which were as follows:
#1 50 psi
#2 60 psi
#3 65 psi
#4 70 psi
Naturally my plugs foul out very quickly (H-12's)
Oil consuption 1/2 quart per tank of gas.
Removed the head last week had about 1mm of carbon build up to remove.
So inevitably it seems a total rebuild is in order
but... I would like to put it off for a little time due to lack of finances to do the job. Here is my question... Is there anything "resonable" I can do to prolong my tractors use for a couple of months without doing significant damage in the long run. It seems to me to be running just OK, the other day I towed home a Ford truck 4 miles with no problem. Also have been using it to clear a 300 ft x 150 ft area in the front of my property without any problems. While there arent any trees being I live in the desert, there are deep rooted shrubs and the like that by hand would be impossible to remove. Also have fairly good soil where Im at in the foothills of the Antelope Valley mixed with course sand. Before I close my next question is concerning two strips of forged metal that came with my tractor when I purchased it three years back. I have posted the pics on a url which I will list. I thought they were stabalizer bars for a moment. They also might have something to do with a plow I have which I have also posted a pic of. If these go together how do they assemble? and -or how can I get some use out of this implement that I cant figure how to mount.

Patrick:

Your pics appear to be a plow bottom assembly & a set of fixed-length stays. The crooked end of the stay would be pinned on each side of the toplink rocker w/ the stays flaring out & down. If you have a straight drawbar the lower holes on the curved end of the stays slides on to the end pins, then the stabilizers over them.

Hi Patrick and welcome.
I don't wish to cast any doubt on the compression readings but I'm very surprised that you don't have any starting problems and/or serious lack of power. Did you do both a dry check and a wet check? Wide open throttle and 3 to 5 puffs each cylinder?
If it is doing what you need to do, for now, run it. DO NOT mill the head! The pistons may hit the head. Clean it, install a new gasket and torque it properly.
I'm sure we've all made mistakes that we don't talk about here. My father always said, "do as I say, not as I did". My response was, "sometimes a banged shin is the remembered lesson" (and I got scars to prove it).

For what it is worth you might try some autolite 437 plugs in your tractor. I find they last longer before fouling out than the champions. Just my opinion and experience. Good luck.

Patrick - I can't help with the picture identification, but I do know if you put some 20w50 weight oil in your tired 9N, it will help you get through to your next rebuild. As long as it is running ok and holding oil pressure you will be fine.

The cause of the high oil consumption and low compression is almost certainly worn pistons and sleeves, which you will replace when you overhaul it anyway, so as long as you keep adequate oil in the crankcase, your not going to damage it by continuing to use it for a while.

To minimize sparkplug fouling and oil consumption, use a heavier grade of engine oil, and be sure you have a functioning thermostat to keep the engine at proper operating temperature.

I agree. Keep oil and gasoline and water in her and she will hold up 'till ya get enough $$ to do the job RIGHT.


Coincidently, my lady friend has the same concern about her 1990 Chrsyler LeBaron with over 300 thousand miles on it. She bought the engine that came in the car, NEW.

I am assuring her that if she will only take MY word for it, it will last her until she can get the car to my shop in PA. Then I will completely rebuild,(remanufactue( the engine and repaint thewhole car in my shop. She is a good customer of my family FOUNDATION. All she has to do is stay in Florida until school is over for this year. She'll need the $$$.

A Florida LAW prohibits me from working on my lady's car without having a STATE LICENSE. I can only work on my OWN vehicle. So, I offered my lady this arrangement: To circumvent the law, I must buy her car for $1.00. After I am done with the MAJOR overhaul she can buy it BACK from ME, only IF she thinks it will be WORTH IT!

TOO MUCH PRESSURE for ME to do a good job, down here.
