Been a long time since I was askin youins a question but hare goes. My working girl 52 6v (+) ground side mount 8n has spent more time not workin than workin in 2004 and is fallin into the same trend 2005. Summary of everythang new NH battery, wiring harness, plugs, points, wire, dist, coil, VR, key switch. Not much left that hasn't been replaced wirining harnes was orginal cloth and was really baaaad. The old girl just doesn't want to start often. Most of the times last year if I re-gapped the points and charged the battery she fired right up. Last two weeks this hasn't worked this time. Voltage to/out of coil, starter turns over, fresh good gas getting to carb. However, NO SPARKIES! Could my points and condenser be BAD already?

Given my problems with regapping the points all the time considering an Electronic Ignition Conversion Kit - 6V Positive Ground. Any real advantage to this I need the old girl to work not work on the old girl all the time.

Thanks

Premie

Premie..... ..while electronic ignition "fixxes" alotta points problems, FIRST ya gotta fixx yer current points problem.

Iff'n yer always having to re-gap yer sidemount points (0.025"), then yer points screw is slippin' gitta NEW SCREW. #8-32x3/16" ($50c, cheap) its a special SHORT screw but quite common in ignition system. Screw threads wearout, you can't see it without special measuring equiptment.

Iff'n yer always haffin to clean yer points because of invisable crud, then yer distributor bushings are worn and needs rebuilding.

Condensers don't suddenly go bad, but can go bad over years of use. Look at yer points, are they pitted, bad condenser. Condensers are known to be bad directly outta the box.

Remember the 6 volt mantra: "keep'em clean, bright, and tight" and don't be fer usin' enny of them thar wimpy ferrin battery cables. Gittcha some 'arrychested 'mericum made one-ought (1/0) thick as yer thumb battery cables for improved engine starting..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Premie---If the cam on the distributor is rusty, the points will go closed from the roughness. My son-in-laws 8-n would run about an hour and then would go to running real bad except at idle. Fine grit sandpaper cured that. ChrisH (IA)
