I'm planning my workshop and wanted to install an "I" beam to span the width of the shop -30 feet. I plan to attach a 2-ton trolly to the beam (so I can lift to-be-accquired tractor stuff). I'm no engineer. What size beam do I need to support 2 tons given a 30 foot span. Thanks much.

It depends upon what support the I-beam has at each end, and/or if there is cross-bracing, but to span 30 feet you"ll need a MINIMUM of 16" beam. (You should also consider whether you really mean "I"-beam....or do you mean "wide flange" beam. WF beam is much lighter and that will be a factor when spanning such a long distance. I suggest you consider only WF beam.) You might also consider whether there will be support from above the beam from rafters or other structure. But to start the design process...I"d recommend you contact the steel supplier and ask them directly your question. They are usually pretty knowledgeable. (I"ll bet they suggest 18-24" WF beam.)

I think at the same time the question should also be asked, what's going to hold up that 2 tons, plus the weight of the beam? I'd hate to see (or hear about) the whole thing coming crashing down on yer noggin. 2 ton is a lot of weight, you'd be pretty close to the weight of a dry 8n at that.

You know, in my dad's old shop up in PA WE still have the orig. CHAIN HOIST that he used fer fix'n engines. The hoist was rated for 8nTONS of lifting capacity. When I was 4 or 5 yrs. old he asked me to stand there (at the job site) and pull on the chain when he wanted ME to.

My dad was re-installing one of dem big ROUND engines on an old fashioned airplane that used to pick-up the mail at his (my dad's) farm!

GEE, after my dad started horrering at me to pull the chain, it was so EASY to do!!!!!

That hoist is of the BC, maybe 300 BC, technology!

Consider newer technology. One of the newer hydraulic lift systems (engine hoists) probablyy made in CHINA and now ON SALE at O'Reilly Auto Parts fer $95.00.
