Well, I started off the day by picking up two sets of Champion H12 plugs (more on that in a moment) and a new float. I purchased the float from a "tractor jockey" up the road, a nice gentleman by the name of Jesse Wills. The price was $10 even (cheap). After a quick lunch, I took the carb off (for the millionth time) and installed the new float and float needle. I now know that my old float was way too sloppy and mis-aligned. The new float went on tight and did not touch the sides of the carb when I joined the two halves. Nice. I then installed the new Champion plugs and gave her a crank. Vrooom! It started up, but the plugs were "clicking" and putting off a bad smell. Are these plugs too much for a '48 8N? The electrodes were white-ish when I pulled them. So I popped a questionable set of AL437's in, and it ran fine -- without the clicking or smell. I still need to buy a new set, and I hope Autozone will take back these Champions. The carb needs adjusted, but I'll hold off on doing that until I have the new AL437's installed. Anyone had similar problems with Champion H12's? Or is this tractor just eccentric? Oh, and one more question. My throttle is now adjusted too low. I guess that happened during the carb rebuild. 1/2 throttle is low throttle and full throttle is 1/2 throttle. Is this an easy adjustment to make? I guess I should just look in the manual for the answer to that question.. :)
