Well here is what has happened in the last week and a half since my crank would not turn over when I tightend the main bearing caps. I took the block and crank back to the machine shop where I initially took it. He worked with it an hour and came to the conclusion that the front bearing cap was not seating on the block. Also he micrometered the main bearing journals and found them to be at the max diameter. I told him I bought a new crank but he said this one had been rebuilt. He said I would have to have it line honed. Also the center main bearing journal on the crank was too narrow and was grinding away the sides off the center sides of the bearing. So after another $250 worth of machine work I am ready to start the reassembly. He said the lock washers on the main bearing caps had dug into the metal and was displacing metal in the bolt holes which was a factor in the front cap not being aligned on the block. He said there should not be lockwashers on the bolts but I told him they were there when I took it apart and the parts manual shows them. Lessons learned are that if you get a "new" crank in may not be a "new" crank and if all parts are at the max dimensions and the oil pump on the front bearing has been allowed to move ever so sightly things may not turn out right.

Alex, I had the same problem when I was reassembling my newly rebuilt engine. When I tried to tighten the rear main, I could'nt turn the engine over. I took it back to the machine shop and he scared the h*** out of me with all the possible scenarios I might be looking at (all very expensive). Well,, as it turned out, he phoned me 2 days later to tell me that the crank was'nt turned properly and he it redone and everything was fine. No charge. What a relief. Sorry you were'nt as lucky, but I'm sure everything will work out in the end.

Alex..... ..I'll bet despite all your tribulations, you're glad you tried to turn the crank over before you buttoned up the engine and had it all put together and bolted up to the tranny and then.....found out the starter wouldn't crank the newly overhauled engine over.

gack..... .I'd hate to think of all the board guessing going on, trying to help you figger out why you couldn't start your new engine.

Lets hope you have no more "surprizes" and every thing is downhill from here on in.

I want to read a "I was successful" post soon. Good Luck..... .Dell

I know it has been very exhaustive and painful, but I'll be you have it running by next week.
I think we all learned from this one.
