Been seeing a lot of odd manufacturer names on tractors, like:

Farm Pro, Kama, Jinma, Iseki, Kioti, Satoh and Swaraj.

Some sound like items on a Chinese menu.

Are these grey market tractors that are just being dumped on the US market?

Are these things any good for anything?

Thanks.

-Sal

i got to agree with soundguy here, i just got into this very subject a couple of days ago, while the grey market tractor was a lot newer, with new tires and such, the parts support would have been dificult the old ferguson i looked at was the better deal, besides, you can drive onto a tractor show with an old ford or fergy or such and folks will love you no matter what kind of shine or {lack of it} you have, get a chinese tractor around those big farmalls or john deeres and they might decide it IS food, ericlb

Grey market refers to a tractor that was designed for use/sale in a market other than, say.. north america. For instance.. a Fergy TE-20 is a grey market tractor over here.. as it was designed for england.

Farmpro is an imported rebranded chinese jinma tractor.. Kama is another import, as well as kioti. These are made to be sold in the american market..

Iseki, satoh would be grey market.. I didn't recognize the other name.

Of the ones you listed.. Kioti is easilly a 2nd brand tractor.. that is.. It easily competes with 'big 3' units when compared with price and quality.

The chinese and some asians are less price.. and arguably.. less quality.. especially in the fit/finish area.

For instance.. the entry level 20hp 2wd jinma 204 tractor can be had for 3400$-3900$ Has a canopy. For a few bucks more you can get power steering and 4wd.. Has 2 stage clutch and 2 range tranny, 3spd pto.. etc.

Lotsa bang for the buck when looking at rice-diesels..

Yanmar is another player.. these are jap tractors, and you can find both domestic and grey models around the states. 3digit models were domestic.. except the 177, and 4 digit models are grey units.

Expect a few more parts/warranty/ tinkering issues with the less expensive grey and import units. Course if you are savy enough to feed and care for an 8n.. you can feed and care for a cheap chineese tractor as well..

One thing to remember, some of these tractors are the suppliers for "The Big Three". Yanmar used to build almost all the John Deere compacts still builds a significant portion, and supplies a lot of parts for their US "Assembled" tractors. The Jap & Korean makes are usually pretty good, Mitsubishi comes to mind. The Chinese are good -for the money- and good enough for the guy who wants a big garden tractor. I wouldn't buy one planning on using it daily as a loader tractor. Whne looking at these always verify parts suppliers.

I don't think some of these are considered "Grey Market". Kioti, and Farm Pro are to me are no more grey market than Kubota is. I know folks with Kioti's and they are very happy with them. There is a complete "Grey Market" section over on tractorbynet.com , maybe some folks over there can tell you more about the subject.
