I have a 9N which has developed a tapping sound. It sounds like someone hitting the lower half of the transmission housing with a 3 lb hammer. It seem to happen when traveling the distance of about one routation of the read wheels. Tractor runs and shifts fine. I would greatly appreciate any ideas.

Thanks, Phil

Are you running chains? I ask because I too get that sound when I put on the buggers for the winter and don't get them strapped tight. Hope its simple. HW

If what you say is really true, i'd have to go with bigGeorge on this and say that you may have stripped spider gears in the differential; that is, if it really is consistent with the rotation of the rear wheels. Could also be a broken tooth on the differential ring gear. Either way, sounds like an axle housing removal is in order.

Philip, I had a similar sound and removed the top cover on my 8n to find 3 teeth missing on a gear. Hope your luck is different.

Aliens have been reported to be interested in these old tractors. It seems they thrive on transmission fluid and the housing is just the right size for their tentacled extremities. Whatever you do don't let it out. The infestation can have disatraous ramifications on rural America. It will leave on its own once the fluid has been digested and seek a new host. Best to keep all other tractors far from the infected victim. They are not friendly and communication is ill advised. Good luck sir and beware!

Does the noise go away if you disengage the PTO?

Phillip

I couldn't resist. Could you ever walk up to your tractor now, hear the noise, and think, I cant't let it out. Just a little ball busting since I had nothing intelligent to offer.Hope those with actual human intelligence can help.
