I AM FAIRLY NEW TO THIS FORUM, ABOUT 9 MONTHS. I HAVE ONLY BEEN ON THE INTERNET FOR ABOUT 1 YEAR.
I THINK THIS IS ONE GREAT BOARD, AND I LEARN ALOT HERE. MY QUESTION IS, JUST WHAT ARE MOST OF THE N'S USED FOR TODAY? HERE IN CENTRAL PA. WE STILL USE OUR 9N AND 8N FOR GENERAL FARM WORK. ALTHOUGH A VERY SMALL FARM, (200 ACRES) WE COUNT ON OUR N'S EVERY DAY. ARE WE A MINORITY, AND SHOULD CONSIDER SELLING THE N'S FOR BIG BUCKS TO COLLECTORS, OR ARE THERE OTHERS OUT THERE WHO STILL WORK N'S DAILY? WE BOUGHT OUR FIRST 9N ABOUT 1960. RON/PA

Here in Iowa where farmers need 1000+ acres if they are full time: N's are acreage tractors for us folks who like country life but work in town. N's won't even pull their grain trailers to the road. My farmer neighbor chuckles every time he sees my N in my barn. Makes some comment about garden tractors as he drives off in his new NH 200 HP tractor w AC, hydrostatic trans, PS, 4WD, etc. He was impressed by the fact that my N has the 3 point hitch just like(tho smaller) his, only 50 years older. Even my retired neighbor who has a 500 acre pheasant preserve has a 85 HP JD 4WD, AC, etc to mow, plant feed plots, play. I feel like the poor boy around here.

I use my 9N as much as I can, mainly in the late summer, early fall, and early winter.

Have been reading all the uses for N's and I guess mine mabe be unique. Along with all the "usual" uses, each spring I "groom" the lake front of our home after the ice raises heck with the beach. I use the scoop, and back blade to smooth the beach and remove all the ridges and banks that Mother Nature thinks need to be there when the ice breaks up. There is no end to the usefullness of these great machines.

Winter I use my 2N for snow removal and spreading manure. Summer I cut and rake 40 acres hay/alfalfa and bush hog 10 acres of pasture.

Winter snow plowing...
Regraded gravel I plowed off this winter...
Brush mowing...
Solved zoning issue...

My dad built a fiberglass storage shed with my brother near his business. To be exact, 4" from his office building. This violated a zoning law in our county. The big difficulty was that for once, my brother and father built something to last so this would be hard to disasemble and reassemble.

We wrapped a chain around the base and hooked it to the 2N. After she started moving, it was like she wasn't pulling anything at all.

In the winter, I use my '48 8N for snow plowing and driveway maintenance. In the summer, I use it for mowing, dirt work, post hole digging, and fun. I have a box blade, back blade, bush hog, post hole auger, and front bucket.

I get at least 20 hours a week some times more.
I love the old N. Plowing, disking, road maintinance, rototilling, grass cutting, pulling.

my two 8N's are the only tractors on the place

last time I decided I needed a newer rig I went down to the rice grinder shop and priced a new one with same horsepower

on the way home I decided an 8n is a pretty good tractor after all

now every time I fire one up I tell my self "saved twenty dollars today"

your mileage may vary

I raise sheep, but do not overstock my pasture and so need to mow from time to time to keep thistles and red cedars from taking over. That's what Dad's 2N is used for. I recently purchased another tractor (a Jubilee) and got a scraper and finish mower with it, so will be adding snow pushing, lawn mowing and barn cleaning to the chores. May try pond building in the future. Sure would like to find a small loader, but don't yet know what to look for.

As to selling for big bucks to a collector. I doubt you could replace the function of your N's for four times the price you'd get out of them, unless they look like the day they came off the assembly line ;>) Anyhow if you decide to sell out and buy a Kabota, Maurry lawn tractor or some other such junk, I'd like a first refusal on the 8N!

In the past week I've used my '47 2n for various tests.
Last Friday I bushhoged and scraped the leavings into a pile. On Saturday I pulled my trailer under some apple trees I'm pruning and filled it with brush, the I pulled the trailer to the big brushpile out back and dumped it. Monday I moved some 8' locust logs and granite curbstones with my forklift. Then I switched to the boompole and moved 2 250 gallon oil tanks. Tuesday it snowed 8" so I just started her up to keep her warm. Wednesday I plowed snow and today I scraped my driveway.

She aint pretty, but she gets the job done.

You nailed it!!! That was my purpose for buying it. In the long run, cheaper than a shrink and loads more fun. I try to drive it at least three times/week and keep my carryall/lift on it for a lot of light chores. I will spend the next couple of weeks getting it and the plows ready for our club's plowdays.
