I just got a 9N with serial # 12956, on block. Has I-beam radius rods. Should this have an aluminum dash and maybe hood ???
Also, has been sitting for 5 months without starting. When I started it and let it run about 3 minutes it smokes pretty good. Has old gas, but do you think it will clear up or do I have a gopher killer ??

My 40 9n ser 22xxx has am alluminum dash/steering column, alluminum side tranny plate...the side with the trans oil dipstick, alluminum shifter topcover. It probably came with a alluminum grill or a solid center bar steel grill. The dog legs don't have lower mounting holes. The fenders have been replaced. Front zerks on the axles. Alluminum hood and dog legs must have come before my 40. Hope it helps
Peter

Your smoking might be bad gas. Try some fresh gas and see. Could also be fouled spark plugs.
Make sure that you are using Autolite 437 or Champion H12 plugs. You might also have stuck rings and getting oil into the cylinders. Put some Marvel Mystery OIl in each cylinder and let it sit for a few days. See iffn that helps.

Hi Roger. I have a fouled plug in one cylinder. How much oil do you pour in; how long do you let sit, and what happens to the oil when you replace the plug and crank her up. Thanks. NYT

I would put in one ounce of MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) in each sparkie hole -- let her sit two days.
Then replace all the plugs with Auto Lite437 or Champion H12.
The oil will burn out when you start it up the next time. Will smoke a little 'til the oil is out.

Can't help you on the aluminum. On the smokin if it has been sitting 5 mos possibilty that rings are frozen. run it for a while put it under a load and see what happens.

Ser 12956 would indicate a mid 1940 model.

The aluminum hoods were only on the first 1000 or so. My 1940 9n has the aluminum dash so they were used much longer than the Al hoods.
You should also have an aluminum transmission cover. The hydraulic dipstick should also be in the trans cover near the hydraulic oil fill.
I can't read the serial number on my 9n but various clues indicate a '40 model.
My 9N also has the smooth hubs and the zerk fittings on the front of the front spindles.
Ths starter button is on the trans cover which was a mid '40 change.
